Our green natural gas is characterized by our global approach: It doesn’t matter whether you cut greenhouse
gas emissions locally or at the other side of the planet;
reducing greenhouse gas emissions improves the carbon
footprint of our whole planet.
Natural gas has the lowest specific CO2 emissions out of all
the traditional energy sources – an average of 200 grams of
CO2 per kilowatt hour (kWh). And for our green natural gas,
we acquire certificates in the same quantity needed to offset the CO2 emissions. The certificates come from pioneering climate protection projects all round the world, projects
that wouldn’t be possible without the proceeds from the
sale of the certificates.

You choose whether you make your natural gas neutral
from one particular project or with a mixture of certificates from various climate protection projects.

meet internationally recognized quality standards. The
certificates acquired by WINGAS are subject to regular
inspection by the TÜV Nord.
Our climate protection projects
and certificates
WINGAS is currently involved in two climate
protection projects in China and Thailand.
Both projects are certified in line with VCS
(Verified Carbon Standard) and thus meet
the highest quality standards. The certificate
management is monitored and inspected by TÜV Nord
every year. That means you can be absolutely certain that
100 percent of the CO2 generated by using green natural
gas will be offset. TÜV also guarantees that the certificates
are removed from circulation after being sold and thus
cannot be used again.
Climate protection project in China:
Purification of process gases
In Caojing, in China, we are involved in a climate protection
project that prevents the nitrous oxide (N2O) generated during the production of fertilizers from being released into the
atmosphere. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas which is very
harmful to the environment; the effect is almost 300 times as
big as with the same amount of CO2. But here, the N2O is converted into climate neutral elements, nitrogen and oxygen, by
using special catalysts at the chemicals company. Hence, the
nitrous oxide is no longer released into the atmosphere. The
saving is equivalent to some 400,000 tons of CO2 a year.

But thanks to a waste water treatment system implemented as part of the climate protection project, the
methane is no longer released into the atmosphere.
Instead it is used as biogas for heat processes in the
plant. This saves the equivalent of 95,000 tons of CO2.
At the same time, the consumption of crude oil, which
is used for various processes in the plant, was cut by 80
percent. The treated water can be used to irrigate the
fields nearby and offers good conditions for fish farming
too, so the project also benefits the local area in terms
of food supply.

Climate protection project in Thailand:
Waste water treatment
The climate protection project which we support in
Thailand sets off a chain of positive effects. There is a
plant north-east of Bangkok where they extract starch
from cassava crops, creating up to five million liters of
waste water every day. The storage of this waste water
in open basins leads to methane emissions. Methane is
also a greenhouse gas and is 21 times more harmful to
the climate than the same volume of CO2.
