AGSV Girls’ Summer Sports Results 2016 ROUND 4 - 12th November SOFTBALL Firsts v HY Result: YVG WON 17v7 Firsts Softball ventured to Keysborough last Saturday to take on Haileybury in the last game before the Christmas break. We banked our second win and are now 2-0 courtesy of another good overall team performance. Yarra plated 7 runs in the first inning and were never headed, scoring every inning. Again our defence was very good and we supported both pitchers well for the majority of the game. A couple of defensive slips late allowed some consolation runs from Haileybury who did not stop trying. Gemma Hamilton again led the from the pitching plate and was very well supported by Caitlin Olley in her second relief appearance in as many games. Due to our large early lead, Caitlin pitched the majority of the game and continued to shut down the opposition offence until very late. Alaina Kett led well from behind the plate as Catcher and Felicity Xu had a great game at Second Base with the play of the day to her left side - relieving for Caitlin when she came on to pitch. We drew a lot of walks all day however when the opportunity presented we also put the ball in play and scored in every innings. Nicolette Rippon led the way with a huge 3-base hit while Caitlin Olley and Felicity Xu again batted well in the lower order. Next round is the first week after Christmas when we take on Caulfield Grammar at Yarra on 11 February. Jacqui Chester and Isobel Cuthbert stood out with consistent performances through their three rubbers while Emily West put in a typically determined performance but in truth, all eight girls could be in the stand out players this week. Played in great spirits all day a big thank you must go to TPS for their sportsmanship and hospitality. We now look forward to next week’s match up against a Wesley side that has historically dominated this competition! PEGS is a perennial top-4 team, with plenty of Senior girls that have played together for years, throw in 3 or 4 State players as well, and we were going to have to improve a lot if we were going to get a win in our first ever home game at Firsts-level. The Yarra girls came out focused and intense, completed their sets of possession, and showed they were keen to make up for the mistakes of last week. The first half was a grind, with PEGS scoring first, before we quickly equalised, a few minutes later they went ahead again on a defensive lapse, but again we answered almost straight away with Hayley George setting up Emily Harris for the equalizer off a perfectly executed set play. Mia Holah then made a great diving touch to deny PEGS their third score of the first half. With the score at 2-2 to start the second half, we focused on how we could better convert our possession into scores. Unfortunately, some skill errors left us struggling to get out of our defensive half in the first 5 minutes. With the inevitable pressure eventually leading to PEGS going up 3-2. That seemed to be the shock we needed, as we scored straight away from the re-start with Emily Harris stepping through their defence to even the score. From then on we never looked back, winning the possession battle for the rest of the second half, with Emily Harris picking up her hat-trick, and Teagan Bradley scoring the winner, after PEGS had scored one against the run of play. Although we probably should have scored a couple more, we dug deep and did enough to grind out a win and put ourselves in a great position to achieve our goal of top 4 this season. Next week we face powerhouse Peninsula, who have won 4 premierships in the last 6 years. With such a huge improvement from last week, we can be confident that we are good enough to compete against one of the best, so long as we keep working hard at training. Finally, congratulations to Lara Henderson and Bec Phillips, who made their debut in Firsts, which was a great reward for the commitment they have shown in continuing to train with the team, despite missing out on selection in the Firsts team. Again, we had a fairly good idea what Haileybury would bring to this game. Our first set for this game was a bit more consistent this week. Again, we got out to a good lead with some great serving from Sam O’Neil, Amy Leslie and Liv Phillips. Our goal for this match was to focus on our basic skills and our processes. First set to Yarra, 25:17 Second set was a very good set of volleyball with the score going point for point but we narrowly went down 23:25. Third set was pretty much the same as the second. A great serving run by Keeley Heymanson when we really needed it meant this time Yarra girls came out on top 25:22. The fourth set was not a closely fought one with our serving letting us down, which in turn gave our opposition an opportunity to re-group and we went down 25:16. The fifth set was another point for point affair. When a hard fought point was available unfortunately, we made the errors, not the opposition. Still, the girls can hold their heads high as we went down fighting with the final set score being 15:13. Our second five set loss in as many games this season. A place that this Yarra team is not used to. However, the whole Girls Volleyball program can take notice that all of the other AGS/APS teams have been working hard over the off season and Yarra has always been the team to beat. The Yarra program will need to re-assess during the Term break to ensure that we come back stronger during the second half of the season in Term 1 2017.
