May 14th Newsletter - Catholic School, St. Margaret Mary School

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
On behalf of the Saint Margaret Mary School faculty and staff, I would like to wish all our
school Moms a blessed Mother’s Day!
The last two weeks of May have been incredibly busy. The students have not only been
busy with their studies but have also been quite involved in ‘SMMS Activities.’
The first week of May began with talent show practices, Student Council applications,
Spring Sing rehearsals, 4th grade churro sales in honor of Cinco de Mayo, and a variety of
classes that took field trips to destinations located all over Los Angeles to enhance their
academic learning. The week ended beautifully with a ‘May Mass,’ hosted by Mrs.
Rosato and her 1st graders honoring our Mother Mary (and all our wonderful moms of
Saint Margaret Mary School).
The second week of May proved to be equally busy! The S.M.M.S Lady Spartans
traveled this past Tuesday to Culver City to compete in the first round of the CYO
Softball playoffs! Coach Val Ramirez and her Lady Spartans were victorious! They shut
out the opposing team…14 zzzzzzzip! They are now in the top 8 and will play this
coming Tuesday afternoon for a bid into the ‘final four.’ Good Luck Lady Spartans!!!
On Wednesday, MAY 10TH our graduating 8TH graders hosted a mini carnival for the
entire school. All our students, from T.k to 8th grade, enjoyed an afternoon of games,
food and fun! Thank you ‘Class of 2017’ for all your efforts in making the afternoon
wonderful.
Also on Wednesday, candidates for SMMS Student Council delivered speeches in hopes
to win a seat on next year’s council. The student body voted on Thursday and winners
were announced on Friday. Congratulations to:

beautifully decorated for our Kinder moms! Thank you Mrs. Vicelja and Mrs. Flores for
a memorable day.
The evening ended wonderfully with lots of food, drink and laughter at the SMMS
DINNER DANCE! A huge thank you to our awesome moms of the MOMS CLUB –
Nakita, Jennifer, Miranda, Tami, Stephanie, Angie, Chantelle, Monica, Melinda, Rose,
Ally, Jolyn and Daisy who planned and prepared this incredible event filled with fun,
fun, fun!!!!! The Lomita Mayor and Saint Margaret Mary School’s own Mark Waronek
was honored and inducted into the S.M.M.S HALL OF FAME at this event for his
tremendous support to our school.
For next week, there is quite a few events on the agenda!
Monday is a half day due to a faculty meeting (12:00 dismissal.) The faculty will gather
together to discuss the remainder of the school year and all that lies ahead!
On Tuesday, the S.M.M.S softball team will play for a berth into the final four of the
CYO PLAYOFFS! Good luck girls!
On that same evening, parents of S.M.M.S will enjoy a fun-filled music presentation as
our students will sing and dance within a country theme at the SPRING SING! The
event begins promptly at 6:00 p.m and students are expected to arrive to their classrooms
by 5:45 p.m. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher for costume information.
*Please note that The Holy Name Society will be hosting a barbeque for all families who
would like catch dinner at the event. Moms Club will also be serving treats!
On Wednesday, the 4th grade will participate in an all-day activity in Hegarty hall.
On Friday, our entire Saint Margaret Mary School student body will attend Mass
together in support of our 2nd graders who will receive the Sacrament of Communion.
Mrs. Becker, our 2nd grade teacher, has been preparing her students for this very blessed
event all year. A reception will immediately follow the church event.
8TH grade will continue working all week on their preparations for graduation. The
entire school will once again sit for the fourth and final round of Star testing. The
students’ test results will undoubtedly be quite valuable when the faculty meets on June
2nd to analyze all four sets of results during our curriculum mapping session.
