OSA 2016-2017 Select Basketball Program For 3rd – 8th Grade Boys and Girls “My overall experience with the OSA program has been an exceptional experience both as a parent and current high school coach in the community. OSA teaches fundamentals and a team aspect of basketball. Knowing that my players who play for OSA and seeing how my own son has continued to improve has only has assured me that OSA continues to thrive teaching young players the fundamentals of basketball that will allow them the opportunity to grow as a player and understand the importance of team play.”--Josh Luedtke, Head Coach of the 2015 State Champions, Creighton Prep 11726 Stonegate Circle Omaha, NE 68164 402-504-1222 www.OmahaSportsAcademy.com “The MISSION of the OSA is to provide a fun athletic environment that promotes HEALTHY COMPETITION and the development of positive LIFE SKILLS through QUALITY instruction, service, and facilities.” 1 Dear Players and Parents: We will be running our tryouts for all 3rd—8th grade players (based on grade in Fall 2016) on March 21st and 22nd, and we look forward to seeing you there! The best value we can offer to you and your child is making him/her a better basketball player and more importantly, developing a love and appreciation for this great game. We have accomplished this by having a great leadership team in place and coaching staff that is second to none. Omaha Sports Academy is committed to your child’s development and the OSA Select Basketball Program, and we will continue to work hard to develop and implement our OSA strategies and skill work! Out of all of the things we do at OSA, the Select Basketball Program is my passion. I love the challenges and opportunities that come with developing a player. Nothing gets me more excited in the short term than watching our teams progress and in the long term, reading about our former players contributing for their high school teams in the newspaper! As a coaching team, we love making a positive difference in our players’ lives and teaching them not only the game of basketball, but more importantly, life skills THROUGH the game of basketball. The leadership of our Select Program includes Coach Charles Thompson, Coach Mike Mackie, Coach Brittany Wilson, and myself. I can’t say enough about the experience these coaches bring to OSA. One of our objectives as a leadership team was to provide more oversight of our teams and coaches than ever before, and it has clearly made a difference with our teams. This hands-on exposure on such a frequent basis is invaluable to our players. OSA will always be a program that allows our coaches to coach and our teams to take on a bit of their own personalities, while at the same time having our leadership be hands-on at practice to ensure the finest of details are being taught correctly. We believe that our unique practice format (which ensures attention to all-around skills, not just specialization) places an emphasis on teaching a consistent skill set and style of play year round, which translates into improving our basketball players. DID YOU KNOW? 95% of last year’s Those who desire to play at the high school level need to understand that it is difficult to 8th graders, make a high school team. When you are trying out for 2-3 days with 75-100 other athletes, regardless of you need to have an edge. We firmly believe that those who play at OSA will have that their osa team edge and be able to separate themselves at a tryout. While we would never state that we placement, went can help turn your child into an NBA player or a high level Division One player, our proven track record will show that OSA players often will place one or two levels higher than had on to make a they not played at OSA. Amazingly, 95% of our graduating 8th grade boys and girls from freshman team? last year went on to make a high school program! We are proud to serve a wide spectrum of young athletes, and we have built a strong program in which every player benefits. While we can talk about our players who played on platinum or gold level teams who have gone on to make HS varsity teams as freshman and sophomores, we also pride ourselves on the development of those who participated at an intermediate level during their years at OSA. An example of this is Alec Johnston, who played on our lowest level 8th grade team, who went on to play at the varsity level and start as a junior! The OSA influence is more present than ever, and you would be hard pressed to find very many teams and organizations that could claim the same. Our players continue to get better, and we are confident that you will see that. This fall, OSA anticipates having the following number of teams at each grade level. th th 4 Grade Boys (6) 4 Grade Girls (2) 5th Grade Boys (8) 5th Grade Girls (2) th 6 Grade Boys (6) 6th Grade Girls (2) 7th Grade Boys (5) 7th Grade Girls (4) th 8 Grade Boys (7) 8th Grade Girls (2-3) 2016-‐2017 FALL/WINTER OSA SELECT TRYOUTS! Leadership/Coaching: The OSA Select Basketball program is coordinated by Coach Charles Thompson and facilitated by Coach Mike Mackie, Coach Brittany Wilson, and Coach Jim Buswell. Bob Franzese, OSA General Manager and long time Omaha basketball coach plays a prominent role in the oversight and direction of this program. The OSA professional leadership is as good as it gets and is committed to working with your child to enable them to be the best that they can be while teaching them a love and desire for this great game! Our select coaches are highly qualified and under the direct tutelage of our professional staff. The vast majority of our coaches are returning for the 2016-2017 season, and this type of consistency in our select coaching staff is one of the many areas that will allow your child to benefit and grow from this program. The OSA leadership team meets weekly to discuss each team and player in our program. We leave no stone unturned in achieving our goal of helping your athlete be the best he/she can be. Practices: OSA Staff is always learning cutting edge trends and is not afraid to educate themselves on a continued basis. In past years, OSA professional staff members have attended the Thunder, Spurs, and Cavs training camps, have been guests at the highly prestigious College Point Guard Camp (PGC), Metro Basketball Coach Athletics, and collegiate and high school practices around town. The objective is for our players to be consistently exposed to the newest ideas and current trends in youth basketball, allowing us to incorporate these trends into our highly successful core fundamental and schematic training. You can count on OSA practices to be crisp, professionally run, and fun for your child! Practice time will focus on skill development as well as offensive and defensive team concepts. Players will be pushed both physically and mentally, yet still have fun each time they attend. Our unique practice format allows for each player to focus on five key areas at each practice: scoring, defensive principles, transition, fast break/ball handling, and offensive team principles. At all practices, one of our professional staff will be directly involved and hands-on with your child’s team. This allows us to teach a progressive skill set and schemes to everyone in the program. Games: Our teams will play a competitive schedule consisting of both league and tournament play. We will always challenge our teams and do our absolute best to find them competition levels where they will have a chance to grow. Our coaches realize that games are an extension of practices. Coaches reinforce to players to utilize the different skill sets that they learn during practice during their actual game time experiences. OSA leadership is actively involved in competitive game situations as much as possible. Feedback on each game observed by OSA Leadership is communicated to the coaches, and is yet another key resource we utilize to allow for growth of individuals and teams! Summer and Fall Skill Sessions: Summer and fall skill sessions allow additional opportunities for skill development outside of the traditional season. We will hold six Sunday evening workouts over the summer months and another three workouts in the fall. Players are highly encouraged to attend these sessions. (Please see the “Important Dates” on page 5.) We firmly believe that players have a chance to grow and develop during the summer months. These sessions are invaluable in allowing your athlete to focus on skill development, giving them the ability to succeed. Our core concepts and fundamental training are employed during these summer months and allows us to be ahead of the game when the season starts in the fall. This, along with our two summer camps and regular season practices, is what sets our OSA Select Program above all other programs in the metro. Summer Camps: Elite Skills Camp and Evaluation / Team Placement Camps: Our Elite Skills Camp is an extremely valuable component setting a highly energetic and competitive tone for the beginning of our off-season development program. During this camp, the OSA Leadership staff will introduce and reinforce our core values on individual skill and team schematics regarding the OSA Way from every detail to the administration and execution of each important concept. The Elite Skills Camp is a springboard to the Summer Sunday Night Workouts and End of Summer Evaluation/Team Placement Camp. Our End of Summer Evaluation /Team Placement Camp provides an opportunity for our players to display the skills acquired through the summer camp and workout season. The camp provides a final opportunity for our players will be evaluated to decide the teams they will compete on during the 2016-2017 Fall/Winter Seasons. Our goal is place players on teams where they are able to develop individually and collectively at a similar pace throughout the course of season. Although this is a very competitive camp, we will continue emphasize player development and team schematics throughout the entirety of the camp. Process for Team Placement: Once evaluations are completed after the final evaluation camp in August, players will be divided into their respective teams, and those teams will be posted on our website. Please keep in mind that players will not automatically be placed on the same level of team as this current year, as players will develop differently over the summer. Those who take advantage of our workouts and camp sessions over the summer months will surely experience significant improvement. 3 OSA Select Basketball Program Payment Pricing Prices to participate in the 2016-2017 Fall/Winter Select Basketball Program are as follows*: 3rd – 4th Grade: $1099 5th – 6th Grade: $1149 7th – 8th Grade: $1199 BEST SKILL SESSIONS * BEST LEADERSHIP * BEST TRACK RECORD * BEST VALUE! * Pricing Breakdown by the Hour …OSA fees are close to $7.50/hr of Instruction and are significantly lower than those offered to the general public and for those trying out in March! As an 8th grader he played on the lower team, however, through hard work, commitment and the excellent skill and team coaching of OSA, he is now a starter and leader on his high school team with current offers from small colleges. Their coaches, programming and skill development academies are superior and a must for all age groups. If your son or daughter is committed to improving, OSA is the place!” -‐Mic Johnston Summer Sunday Night Work Outs: June 12, 19, 26, and July 10, 17, and 24 3rd – 4th Graders: 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm 5th – 6th Graders: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm 7th – 8th Graders: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Elite Skills Camp: June 6 - 9 3rd – 4th Graders – 8:00 am - 10:45 am 5th – 6th Graders: 11:00 am - 1:45 pm 7th – 8th Graders: 2:00 pm - 4:45 pm End of Summer Evaluation Camp: August 1 - 4 3rd – 4th Graders – 8:00 am - 10:45 am 5th – 6th Graders: 11:00 am - 1:45 pm 7th – 8th Graders: 2:00 pm - 4:45 pm Fall Sunday Night Work Outs: Sept 11, 18, 25 3rd – 4th Graders: 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm 5th – 6th Graders: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm 7th – 8th Graders: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Select Parent / Player Meeting: October 2nd (Times TBD) Regular Practices: October 3rd to mid-to late-March Practice schedules will be released at a later date. 4 Registration Options Note: ONCE TRYOUT RESULTS HAVE BEEN POSTED, To secure your placement on one of next season’s teams, registration must be completed and submitted with a minimum $300 first payment by Monday, March 28th.
