5 Drills to Master Before Playing College Lacrosse
First Drill: Wall Ball
There’s no excuse for not mastering wall ball – this is something that all
lacrosse players are taught from a young age. Thankfully I learned the
importance of playing with both hands early on, but one thing I’d always
heard throughout college is guys wishing they knew the same thing
earlier.
1.
All you need is a stick, ball, and wall
2.
Alternate 50 right, 50 left, 50 catch and switch
3.
Repeat 5 times for a total of 750 touches

Second Drill: Ground Balls
Possession is critical in lacrosse at all levels – middle school through the
pro’s. If you don’t have the ball you can’t put anything on the
scoreboard and keeping the ball gives your D a break. The best way to
do this is to win the ground ball game.
1.
Grab a partner or teammate
2.
Alternate rolling the ball to one another – the
defender should be checking your bottom hand
3.
Do this to exhaustion – minimum of 30
minutes

Third Drill: Quick Stick Pass
Getting the ball in and out of your stick quickly can be what separates
you from other prospective recruits. One cardinal rule that’s applicable
across all sports – the ball moves faster than the player.
1.
Grab a partner or teammate
2.
Treat the ball as if it were ‘hot potato’ and go back
and forth as many times as you can in a row
3.
Each time someone drops the ball they need to drop
and perform 25 push-ups

Wrap-Up
These drills may seem basic, but building a solid foundation is going to
be what separates you from your peers. Follow these drills enough time
and it will become second nature and won’t think twice when there’s
two minutes on the clock and there’s a loose ball or you’re on the crease
in overtime of the National Championship. Master these and one day
maybe you’ll be hoisting the championship trophy on Memorial Day
weekend!
