First XVIII Football Match Report
Cabra First XVIII created history for their school this week beating Pembroke and notching up
their first win for the season and first ever win in the First XVIII ISSA competition. It has been a
groundbreaking year for this squad and it was fantastic to see some rewards on the
scoreboard for these players.
A close start to the game with only six points the difference at quarter time. We were able to
sneak ahead slightly in the second quarter but really needed to take more care with our
disposal and provide a better effort when the ball turned over.
After half time we were able to dominate the centre clearances giving us first use of the
football. We used the ball much better and repeatedly delivered the ball long into our forward
line giving our strong marking forwards a lot of opportunities. Our confidence and enthusiasm
grew with every goal kicked. It was a great second half kicking 10 goals to three and ending up
with a comfortable 10 goal win.
It was a great team performance with all 21 players contributing. Our midfield was great
winning plenty of football all around the ground. Nathan Robertson provided a number of terrific
contested marks up forward after half time and Riley Johnston and Brett Schaumloffel lead a
great backline, providing good rebound out of defense.
It was a great day for football at Cabra and a great reward for not only the players, but for
everyone who has worked hard to establish the Cabra First XVIII program.
Dave Reynolds, Coach
