Below are some of the observations made during the activity… The children enjoyed using the money to ‘buy’ the things they needed to build their house. We used a selection of real money in our role play. Arran, “Give me some money and you can have some of these. What do you want? Do you want some sticks?” Poppy, “You’ve got to say what you want.” Jacob, “I need some sticks for this house.” Arran, “What do you want?” Poppy, “Straw please.” Jacob made the house of sticks and then used the wolf puppet to imitate blowing it down. Jacob, “These are drum sticks!” (talking about the wooden lollypop sticks.) He then proceeded to drum with them. Millie, “Look at my house Miss James! Is it betterer?” (Millie spent a long time making a brick house with lego and showing me it as she went along.” Arran and Millie were role playing the story…. Arran, “Little pig, little pig, let me in!” Millie, “No!” When we were tidying the play things away Jacob asked if he could have the story book to read. I gave it to him and Poppy came up to me and asked if she could read it to. I suggested that they read the story together. They sat next to each other, holding the book together. Jacob turned the pages and Poppy ran her fingers over the words. They didn’t speak but looked at the pictures together.
