Loading Audacity and the LAME
encoder for MP3 exports
Instructions
1. Download Audacity
2. Download the LAME encoder
3. Export a file as an .MP3 file and point
Audacity at the LAME encoder

1. Downloading Audacity
• Go to the Sourceforge website at
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
• Follow the steps as shown in the following
slides to download Audacity

Download Files
1. When you try to download files you may get
a security warning underneath the address
bar saying that Internet Explorer has blocked
the download
2. Click on the message and select ‘Download
Files’
Audacity download instructions
1. Choose ‘Run’ to install on one
machine, select ‘Save’ to use for install
on more than one machine
2. Wait whilst the download completes
3. You may get a security warning – click
‘Run’
Audacity Setup Wizard
1. When greeted with the setup wizard, select
‘Next’
2. Choose ‘Accept the agreement’ and click ‘Next’
3. Read the important information and click ‘Next’
4. Select the Destination Location and click ‘Next’
5. Select additional tasks and click ‘Next’
Setup is then ready to install
Audacity on your computer
1. Click ‘Install’
2. When completed, click ‘Finish’
3. Choose the language for Audacity to use and
click ‘OK’
4. Audacity should now be installed on your
computer
2. Download LAME encoder
• You can not export files from Audacity as MP3
files without installing the LAME encoder.
• This is not a Sourceforge file but can be
downloaded via their website by following the
steps on the next few slides

Downloading LAME encoder
1. From the LAME download page select the
appropriate zip file and click (e.g. ‘For
Audacity on Windows’)
2. When asked if you wish to open or save the
file, select ‘Open’
3. Click on ‘Extract all files’
4. You may need to right click on the folder,
select ‘Extract All’ and follow the wizard
5. The files will be downloaded as a Zipped File
Extract Compressed Zipped File
1. Click ‘Browse’ to choose the file location
2. Choose a location for the file which you will
remember
3. Click ‘OK’
4. Be patient while the files are unzipped
5. The files will be saved in the location you
have given
3. Export an .MP3 file for the first time
• The first time you export a sound file as an
.MP3 file you have to tell Audacity where the
LAME encoder is
• Follow the instructions in the following slides
to do this
Click Export
as MP3
Choose the
destination
Give the file
a name
Click Save
You will only see
this message the
first time you save
as an MP3 file
Audacity tells you
it does not know
where the LAME
encoder is
Click Yes
Navigate to the location of the
extracted file
Select the
lame_enc.dll then
click Open
Open the LAME
folder
When you export a
file as an MP3 file
you will always see
this window
Complete the fields
if you wish then
click OK
