5. Health & Safety (MH)
• No accident reports
• Please ensure Out of Hours register is signed and
that no lone working permitted. Electronic swipe
system is being monitored to ensure compliance.
• Fire Safety – In due course there will be a fire
evacuation drill. Fire Wardens and Marshalls will
receive an amended evacuation protocol before
any test is conducted.
5. Health & Safety – The Lift (Food
Science Building)
• Lift temporarily out of order. Should heavy equipment transportation be
required to upper floors during this period then it should be organised
using qualified removal personnel.
• In terms of disabled access - should there be any disabled visitors during
the period whilst the lift is inoperative then they should be made aware of
the fact that these facilities are unavailable.
• In addition, the current generic fire evacuation plan is as follows;
Food Science Building
• Horizontal evacuation is possible on the ground floor in two directions
toward three final exit doors.
• There is access to upper levels by the lifts, but these are not suitable for
use during an evacuation!
• There is horizontal evacuation in two directions toward protected
stairways on both the first and second floor.
• (On the first floor, evacuation is possible in one direction into Stead House
and onto a stairway to a final exit. BUT THIS CONNECTING ROUTE HAS
SEVERAL STEPS!)

University Open Days 2014
• Friday, 20th June
• Saturday, 21st June
• Friday, 27th June
• No doubt more dates for Sept/Oct will be
announced by the University in due course
10. Finance (CR)
• MSc Projects - £200 each student – allocated
April 2014
• End of Financial Year 31st July 2014 – ensure
all invoices are received and paid by 30th June
2014 where possible
• New procedure for rewarding volunteers on
research projects
Finance
• The actual financial position of the School has been as
‘fuzzy’ this year as I can ever remember it
• 2013 IPE figures had to be adjusted to deal with the ‘5%
surplus’ requirement
• Then it wasn’t a requirement
• Michael Goran is still included in our figures (but is out next
year)
• Neither income or expenditure figures for this year
appeared until March (whilst the targets were still unclear –
see above)
• Catherine and I were then asked to find £40k on the spot at
a meeting 2 weeks ago!
IPE – Main Calculation Changes to Last
Year’s Plans
• 5% surplus (unrestricted funds) as a percentage
of income (all funds) to be achieved by 17/18
• No risk adjustments for QR and international
student fee income
• QR from 2015/16 has been calculated from the
staff submitted in REF 2014, the estimated quality
profile and an estimated UoA RUR and then
deflated by 20%.
• Reduced service savings leading to increase in
schools central overhead charges.
