Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040

Greater
Manchester
Transport Strategy
2040
Our History
Greater Manchester was a city of factories.
Today it is a modern city.
There are lots of jobs, and things to see and do.
It is the people who live, work, and visit Greater
Manchester that make it “great”.
Transport gets people where they need to go.
Our Future
In the year 2040, we will be bigger and better:
 More residents
 More jobs
 More houses.
But this means more journeys being travelled in
Greater Manchester every day.
There are exciting plans to make more jobs, and make
Greater Manchester richer.
Transport is important to all of them.
But there are challenges:
 Air pollution and changes to our weather.
 Traffic jams and congestion.
 People without enough money.
 New technology.
 People not doing enough exercise.
If we plan carefully, we can make things better.
People always come first.
In 2040, we want to make:
 People’s lives better
 Places nicer to live
 A cleaner, greener, richer, Greater Manchester.
This means more walking and cycling, better public
transport, safer towns, and fewer people using cars.
Transport will be safer and simpler.
We are improving public transport so that there are
fewer problems with buses and trams arriving late.
Our Transport Strategy for the year 2040:
 A plan to help people travel and get to jobs
 A plan of the things we will do in the next 5
years
It thinks about different types of transport:
 To other countries.
 To other big cities, such as London, Leeds and
Liverpool.
 To Manchester city centre and around it.
 To other towns across Greater Manchester.
 In our local areas.
There will be easier and faster ways to travel.
Transport in our local areas
We will help people without a car. It will be nicer to
cycle and walk with fewer cars on the roads and less
traffic jams on our local streets.
We will help make our towns nicer places to be,
making our roads better for everyone, and better
public transport.
It will be easier for people to travel to shops, parks,
schools and jobs.
Transport across Greater Manchester
People will easily be able to travel quickly into the city
centre without needing a car.
Travel in Greater Manchester will be more
environmentally friendly which means the network
will last for the future. It will be more joined up.
Stations will be better, with high speed (faster) trains
to other cities.
Cycling and walking will be safer and easier across
Greater Manchester.
Tram (Metrolink) and bus services will be made
better. More trams and more seats and new tram
lines, will make public transport a good option for
everyone.
Transport to other big cities
We are improving our roads and railways to other
cities.
More trains, will let more people travel to jobs,
schools and universities in other cities.
Travel information will be available “real-time”.
This means you won’t have to plan ahead on your
journey and you’ll be able to check when your tram or
bus is going to arrive using your smartphone.
Payment will be ‘cashless’, so you won’t have to carry
money around. You will be able to pay using cards or
your phone.
Transport to other countries
It will be easier to get to Manchester Airport. This will
help make new jobs, and make Greater Manchester
better known around the world.
