This is an introductory course that aims to
teach basic statistical methods for engineers.
The course subjects include NumericalGraphical Data Representation-Summary,
Random Variables-Probability-Distributions,
Hypothesis Testing, and Simple Linear
Regression.
7. Linear Regression and Correlation
Method of least squares estimation, properties
of least squares estimators, inferences based
on least squares estimators, checking adequacy
of the model; correlation; regression using
transformed variables; multiple linear
regression. (3 weeks)

1. Introduction – Statistics in Engineering (0.5 weeks)
2. Basic Probability Concepts
Sample space and events, probability axioms,
elementary rules of probability, conditional
probability, Bayes' Theorem. (1.5-weeks)
3. Random Variables and Probability Distributions
Random variables, discrete and continuous,
probability distributions, distribution function
and probability density function; mean and
variance of a probabilty distribution; special
discrete distributions: binomial, geometric,
negative binomial, Poisson, multinomial;
special continuous distributions: normal,
uniform, log-normal, gamma, Weibull; joint
probability distributions. (2 weeks)
4. Treatment of Data and Descriptive Statistics
Dot diagrams, histograms, stem-and-leaf
displays; descriptive measures: sample mean,
median, variance, standard deviation; quantiles
and percentiles; boxplots. (1 week)
5. Random Samples and Sampling Distributions
Random sampling, estimators, method of
maximum likelihood, sampling distributions.
(1 week)
6. Statistical Inference for Single Sample – Two
Samples
Tests of hypotheses, inference on the mean,
two means, inference on the variance or two
variances. (3 weeks)
