We Would Like To Thank You

The Food for Others Mission is to distribute free food to our neighbors in need, in partnership with our
Northern Virginia community, and to provide opportunities for people to volunteer their resources.
We Would Like To Thank You
On this Giving Tuesday, we here at Food for Others would like to take this time to highlight and
thank the countless number of supporters that dedicate their time and effort into helping Food For
Others help those in need. With the winter holidays, thousands of families, students, and many
others are struggling to make ends meet. Through your support, Food For Others provides
nutritious foods to help ease our neighbors' struggles. This year a number of record-breaking food
drives as well as financial support from generous individuals, companies, foundations, and other
organizations has allowed us to serve hundreds of families every day and to distribute over 2.2
million pounds of free food in 2016. This would not be possible without the generous support of all
of our donors, volunteers, and countless others. For that we cannot be more thankful and committed
to the fight against hunger and helping those in need.
Our new Executive Director Annie Turner, who began in July 2016, is proud to highlight that "In
FY2016, we paid 50 cents for every pound of food we distributed. For that same period, the
approximate average wholesale value of 1 pound of food was $1.67. We were able to increase the
value of your donation three-fold. We are honored to have your support and look forward to a
renewed commitment to reach our goals of increased accessibility and nutrition," and, in the words
of Maya Angelou, "When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed."
Giving Tuesday Is Here!
Long-time volunteer and donor to Food for Others Jeff Wu, AgentKnowsHomes.com, filmed this
video on Giving Tuesday at Food for Others to celebrate a community dedicated to helping those in
need. #GivingTuesday is all about ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things and
the great use of power in numbers to help all in need.

A Few More Examples of Our Generous Community
Paul VI High School held their "Hunger Action Week" which included the 2016 "World
Hunger Day" event along with their 2016 "Ton of Love Canned Food
Drive." The World Hunger Day event raises awareness for the
issue of global hunger which reminds us that hunger is a major
concern around the world in addition to our local area. The Ton of
Love Canned Food Drive is one of Food For Others' greatest
sources of support and helps keep our shelves stocked for the
entire year. This year produced the greatest results ever in the 20+
year history of the drive with a donation total of 49,972 pounds of
nutritious food. Paul VI has been one of the largest contributors of
FFO and we thank them for their continued support!
The local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and Scouting for Food supporters
joined together to break the Scouting for Food collection amount record by donating and collecting
over 20,000 pounds of food! This was the
largest amount of food collected in the 9-year history of
the annual Scouting for Food drive benefiting Food for
Others. We thank all who participated for making this
possible--the neighbors who donated food, all the local
area Boy Scouts who organized the drive and collected
the food, and the Scouts and volunteers who joined the
FFO Board members and staff at our warehouse to sort
the huge amount of food collected.
James Madison High School students and staff ran the school's
annual canned food drive in support of Food For Others. This food drive
brings students and staff together through an internal competition between
classes to see which class can donate the greatest amount of food, with
the ultimate goal of giving back to the community. The Student
Government Association helped collect and tally the donated canned foods.
Student leaders targeted beating the amount of food donated in the past,
challenged each student to bring in at least one can during the drive, and
successfully collected 9,815 pounds.
Merrifield's Sweetwater Tavern and employees of all the various Great American
Restaurants held a food drive for Food For Others which amounted to 5,915 pounds of food,
double what they collected last year! We at FFO are so appreciative of the continuous and
stalwart support provided by Great American Restaurants and thankful for their contributions.
Quest Insurance and Sami Satouri provided Food For Others
with a new outdoor box. This metal box will help us
to collect food by providing a secure place to accept food
donations. Thank you for your support!
Torres Advanced Enterprise Solutions donated
119 fresh turkeys and a box of food. They are located
near the FFO warehouse and wanted to do something
good for the community. The group was led by Rick
Orth, the Director of Operations.
