RULES FOR THE EGG DROP CONTEST: A team may consist of one to four participants. Each team will construct a device that will enclose and protect an egg from cracking or breaking when it is dropped from a 2nd floor height (approximately 20 feet) towards a target on the ground floor. The goal is to build a device with the least weight and the shortest dimensions that will land as close to the target as possible. This device must be built before the contest and must be registered upon arrival (Wednesday, April 3, 2012 12:00 p.m. – InterAmerican Campus, Flag Courtyard). MATERIALS AND DESIGN: There are no restrictions on the materials used or on the shape and design of the device. However, the device cannot have a dimension (diameter or diagonals in any direction) longer than 15 inches. If the device has wings or a parachute, the longest length will be measured with the wings or parachute fully extended. EGGS: We will supply medium sized eggs. The device must be built so that an egg can be enclosed in it right before the drop. You must provide any additional material like tape or glue to enclose or hold the device together after the egg is enclosed. The device will be weighed after egg is enclosed. DESCRIPTION AND TEAM NAME: Each team should write on a 3 by 5 card, the name of each team member and a brief description of the design. JUDGING: Judges will check and measure the following: Before the drop: L = the longest dimension in any direction (diagonals and diameters) must be less than 15 inches. Any device with dimension longer than 15 inches will be disqualified. W = The egg will be weighed first, then device with egg enclosed will be weighed. The difference of the two is W. After the drop: S = the survival factor, S = 1 if there is no crack and S = 0 if there is a crack D = the distance in inches between the target and the center of the device at the location where device stops The score is computed using the following formula: Score = 100 grams x 15 inches x 30 inches x S W L D PRIZES: The devices with the three highest scores will win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes. In addition, the most innovative prize, as determined by the judges, will win the incentive prize regardless of S value.
