IPL has been used to treat rosacea, hyperpigmentation, melasma, age and sunspots, broken capillaries, spider veins, stretch marks, and other conditions as well. IPL is a great tool to help combat the effects of ageing, and achieve a more youthful appearance. IPL offers a legitimate and long-lasting solution, as opposed to some procedures which offer only short-term results. IPL can also be utilised anywhere on the body, offering great versatility from a single procedure. Procedure Details I will take a detailed medical history and do a patch test 24 hours, (no more than 3 days) prior to your appointment. This is a legal requirement. Hairs should be 1 to 2mm long when the client comes in for treatment, so it is possible to mark out the treatment area. Long hairs take up the energy and prevent all of it reaching the hair follicle, therefore I will shave the hair just before treatment for maximum transmission of the energy. It is necessary to apply a thin layer of gel to the skin prior to treatment to assure an optimal optical transmission of light from the applicator to the skin. During an IPL procedure, intense light from a range of wave lengths is focused on the specific parts of your skin that I am treating. The IPL device itself is gently pressed onto the skin, with a smooth, transparent surface emitting the light on the targeted areas. You will wear eye goggles to protect your eyes and vision during the procedure, (I will also wear protective glasses). You may also take pain medication before or after the procedure, but you do not undergo any form of anaesthesia. Simple paracetamol from the local supermarket is all that would be recommended. Facial treatments can usually takes 10-15 minutes, whereas both legs or an entire back will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The technology uses a high-powered, hand-held, computer-controlled flashgun to deliver an intense, visible, broad-spectrum pulse of light, generally in the visible spectral range of 400 to 1200 nm. Various cut off filters are commonly used to selectively filter out lower wavelengths, especially potentially damaging ultra violet light. The resulting light has a spectral range that targets specific structures and chromophores (e.g. melanin in hair, or oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels) that are heated to destruction and reabsorbed by the body. IPL shares some similarities with laser treatments, in that they both use light to heat and destroy their targets. But unlike lasers that use a single wavelength (colour) of light which typically matches only one chromophore, and hence only one condition, IPL uses a broad spectrum that when used with filters, allows it to be used against several conditions. This can be achieved when the IPL technician selects the appropriate filter that matches a specific chromophore. What can IPL be used for? Hair reduction Photo-rejuvenation Removal of sunspots Acne reduction Removal of small blood vessels Hair reduction Full Body Legs Only $30 $15 Arms & upper torso Legs, arms & shoulders $20 $25 Most effectively in darker, coarser hair. Broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin, targeting melanin. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root). The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. It is also claimed that heat conversion occurs directly in the darker capillaries that bring blood to the follicle. At any one time, not all hair follicles are ‘active', and only active hair follicles can be affected by the treatment. Inactive hair follicles can be treated as they become ‘active’ over time. The area to be treated should be clean shaven and free of sunburn. IPL treatment is not effective on red hair, grey hair or light blonde hair. Nor is it suitable for black skin, as it can cause skin damage.
