Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Problems and Concerns
• Top level integration has been delayed by 2 months until April 1st
– Radiation shield design taking longer than expected
– Mechanism rework required to pass flexure tests and fit checks
– Focus mechanism design/fab/assembly took longer than expected
• Radiation shield fabrication will extend into March
• Documentation (Manuals)
– Maintenance manual outline started; procedures documented as carried out
– delayed by focus on mechanism testing and radiation shields
• OIWFS prism installation
– OIWFS complete except for installing detector
– prism needs to be installed and tested before benches integration into the
dewar – latest date for receipt is 3/4/2002 (with installation hardware)
• IFU
– Proceeding with mass models
– There is a chance for integration if it arrives in February

Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Subsystem Testing
• Basic philosophy remains unchanged
– All subsystems tested prior to integration
– Quantify performance for mechanism motion tables,
flexure compensator
31
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Subsystem Testing (2)
• All mechanisms have undergone functional testing
– Some testing on focus remains (1/17)
– Need to complete clean/cold tests
– Turrets flexure performance determined, provides
initial input for flexure compensator settings
• Optical tests on camera, collimator remain
– No alignment required
– Fore-optics aligned and tested
32
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Subsystem Testing (3)
• OIWFS integration nominally complete
– System aligned and tested with warm MUX
– Need to install science detector
– Still limited time to install and check S-H prism
33
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
OIWFS Issues
•
•
•
•
•
•
All OIWFS software accounted for
MUX readout working
Some setup information incomplete
Electronics documentation incomplete
Operating software is working
Mechanism status (9/20/01)
– Zero is displaced on gimbal Y-axis
– Otherwise, hardware appears OK
34
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Components
• Top Level
– Instrument Sequencer
– Interfaces to detector, wavefront sensor, components controller, OCS
• Components Controller
– Control (CAD, CAR, Apply)
– Status and Alarm database (SAD)
• Low Level Software
– Motor control
– Temperature readback

35
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Work Remaining - Design
• Alarm and Status Propagation

• Low Level (Hardware Interfacing)
– No remaining coding planned
• Components control
– Tweak engineering user interface
• Instrument Sequencer and Interfaces
– Engineering User interface (ongoing)
37
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Work Remaining - Testing
• Low Level
– Prefer fully wired system for end-to-end test
– Motors
•
•
•
•
Multiple motors simultaneously
Determine distances between limits, switches, etc
Set speeds, acceleration, backlash parameters
Actual mechanism(s) needed
– Temperature Probes
• Set calibration curve and individual offsets
– Pressure Sensor
• Verify operation in final configuration
38
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Work Remaining - Testing
• Upper Level -- EPICS
– Engineering screens provide next level of test
• Top Level -- OCS compliance
– use OCSwish
• new tool, in use in Hawaii, verifies OCS interface
39
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Work Remaining
• Simulation allows testing without hardware
– Works only for motors.
• Additional work
–
–
–
–
Lab Support
Conversion to GEM7 or GEM8
powerPc on Detector controller
Mechanism testing
• Set configuration files
40
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Work Remaining
• Software is done when
– Motors, temperature readback, etc, work at command
line (low level)
– Engineering Screens provide required control and
readback
– OCSwish/Acceptance test proves compliance with
Gemini system
– GNIRS works on the telescope
41
Quarterly Review
January 24, 2002
Software Interface Issues
• Array Controller
– Interfaced correctly to instrument sequencer?
• OCS
– OCSwish will help, but it’s new to us
• OIWFS
– real testing is not GNIRS concern.
