IT will happen - Holy Cross College

By Patrick and Charlie
The day will come when robots will become a lot smarter than their
makers. Technology has come a long way in the past 50 years and we
are worried that it will evolve past the human race. People such as Bill
Gates, Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have talked about A.I.
(Artificial Intelligence) getting out of hand. The Microsoft founder Bill
Gates said, “I am in the camp that is
concerned
about
super
intelligence. First the machines will
do a lot of jobs for us and not be
super intelligent. That should be
positive if we manage it well. A few
decades after that their intelligence
is strong enough to be a concern. I
agree with Elon Musk and some
others on this and don’t understand
why some people are not
concerned.” In recent movies they
have been using amazingly advanced robots and equipment, the like
of which wouldn’t be imaginable fifty years ago.
Artificial intelligence (A.I) is the science and engineering of making
intelligent machines, mainly computer programs. The term A.I. was
coined in 1956 by John McCarthy at the Massachusetts institute of
technology. A.I includes the following areas
Gaming
Expert systems
Natural language
Neutral
robotics
systems
and
A.I. machines have not
reached their full potential
so scientists can only keep improving them but can we keep up with
the process? It won’t be long until we have robots in every household
to do what we request. If it has only been fifty years to accomplish
what we have what will it be like in another fifty years?
Hacking Origins
Hacking originated in the late 1950s and early 1960s by a group of young men
at M.I.T. It all started at a model train club which later transferred to mainframe
computer room. These “hacks” were used as fun activities, not for the less
honourable pursuit by which it’s known for today.
Later on several hackers tried to hack U.S telephone lines modifying
them to make free long distance calls. Around the 1980s is when computer
hacking first emerged which most of us know hacking for today.
Sony Hacking
The first signs that Sony’s
system was being hacked
occurred on November 22
2014 when skulls with a
message
underneath
threatening to expose Sony’s
secrets started to appear on
Sony employees computers. The hackers claimed they got this data through a
sophisticated hack. This hack caused great I.T. problems for the Sony employees
as they said they had to use a pen and paper and use their fax machine. A group
called #GOP which means Guardians of Peace were the ones behind the attack.
North Korea is thought to been involved in the hack as Sony was going to be
releasing a movie called ‘The Interview’ which was about an American talk show
host assassinating Kim Jong-Un. The hackers said that any cinema that screen
the movie would regret screening it alluding to 9/11 type acts. The movie was
then subsequently pulled from its Christmas day theatrical release. Following
this decision there was huge backlash from the public and celebrities who
claimed that Sony should still release the movie and not let the hackers win.
Sony did decide to release the movie but it was only a limited theatrical release
and would also be available for download. North Korea claimed the movie as an
“act of terrorism” last June. The country has since denied their involvement in
the movies hacking but was extremely happy that it had been hacked. It is
unknown the extents of North Korea’s cyber hacking abilities. Sony executives
have since said that there must have been a man on the inside for the hackers
to know where to get the most exclusive and explosive information. Some of
this information included that Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were paid less
that there male co-stars in American Hustle and that George Clooney had
emailed Sony executive
Amy Pascal after the failure
of the movie “The
Monuments Men” that he
was extremely sorry and
that he had lost his touch.
Some of Greatest Hacks of All Time
Hacking of the BBC…While on air!
In October of 1983 during the BBC’s live broadcast of their special on computers
they were demonstrating a little something you might have heard of call “Emails”. They were showing how they could log in to their email and access their
account but when they tried access their files they had discovered that their
accounts had been hacked. There were two hackers involved called Oz and Yug.
The hacker’s actually left the presenters a little song
“Put another password in, Bomb it out and try again. Try to get past logging in,
we’re hacking, hacking, hacking….
Try his first wife’s maiden name, This is more than just a game, It’s real fun, but
just the same, It’s hacking, hacking, hacking”.
While this may have not been the most complicated hack of all time, it’s
probably the first hack broadcasted live on TV.
The Russian Job
In 1995, a Russian man named Vladimir Levin pulled off one of the boldest
cybercrimes of the decade gaining access to the computers of banking giant
Citibank and persuading the computers to transfer around $10.7million into
various accounts him and his partners had set up.
He was arrested at Heathrow
and eventually extradited to
the US and jailed for three
years. Rumors persist that he
wasn’t
actually
the
mastermind
behind
the
operation and had simply
exploited work already done
by another Russian hacking
group who were too polite to
steal any money.
Greatest Hack Ever
Obviously we don’t know what the greatest hack of all time is because if we did
it wouldn’t be the greatest hack ever. Hacking is all about being anonymous and
not getting caught so we don’t know what the greatest hack is because the
hackers didn’t get caught. Do you know what the best hack of all time is?
Anonymous is a technical group who are known worldwide for being
amazing hackers who have targeted countries as organisations such
as North Korea and Lizard squad.
They come in groups of thousands and dress in guy Fawkes masks. This
is to hide their identity but is also used to fight against Scientology.
They say that it hurts people, this is why anonymous protest every
month. They are not against scientology as a religion but they are
against their disruptive practices. They also fight for peace and will go
as far as hacking important equipment to resolve their problems. They
have been rumoured to
be working with the U.S
government to stop
overall hacking. They
have helped people (like
when they attacked
Lizard squad) but have
also caused trouble (in
their protests; many
police have to be around
so they don’t break into
violence).
Noone knows when anonymous started or by who but all we
know is that they fight and wont give up. They are doing everything in
their power to attack sciencetology.
The groups top three hacks include:
No3: Operation
payback
On December
2010
When the U.S
government
demanded for
wikileaks
to
stop releasing
top
secret
information to the public. A number of websites that sported wiki had
turned against them by freezing accounts and shutting down web
pages, anonymous decided to freeze their websites.
No2: Email drop
March 14 2011
In an effort to expose bank of America they decided to leak e-mails
from a seven year working employee on bankofAmericasucks.com. It
may have been big news but it failed to make headlines due to the fact
that BoA was already in the news
No1: Operation Sony
A different Sony website was getting hacked every week, when play
station network was shut down for what seemed like a year it was all
because of an attack by Anonymous. After Sony decided to take a man
called ‘George Hotz’ to court for creating and distributing software
that allowed PSN users to run homemade software on their consoles.
