5th Grade Cow Eye Dissection
The fifth graders had an opportunity to dissect a cow's eye with guidance from Dr. Berger of Erie Family Eye Care. Students were able to learn and name the different parts of the eye in order to do some comparison between humans and
other animals. Did you know that cows can see in the dark? The cow eye has shiny blue green lining in the back of the
eye. This is the tapetum. It reflects light from the back of the eye. If you shine a light at a cow at night, the cow’s eyes will
shine with a blue-green light because the light reflects from the tapetum. Humans do not have this tapetum. Make sure
to ask your child about what they liked about the dissection!
