The Food of Japan! And you are learning with YoonSuk and Walter! What is Japanese Food? Japanese food mainly consists of Rice. “ Gohan” in Japanese. It is usually accompanied with soup “おかず ”. It comes with some fish, meat, vegetable and my all time favourite, Tofu. When Did the Style of Food Change? The style of traditional food in Japan changed when other countries started trading with Japan in the 16th century when Japan encountered traders from Portugal. How Did the Style Change? During the 16th century when the Portugal traders came, they were introduced to fried foods. At this point, fried food was uncommon in Japan. They also started eating sugar and corn. So Why Didn’t Japanese People Eat Meat? During the 6th century, Buddhism became the main religion in Japan. And the eating of meat and fish was prohibited. (This lasted for 1200 years.) People only started eating meat again after the Meiji restoration. What Are Some of the Food That Have Been Introduced to Japan? I’ll let the pictures speak for them selves. Why do Japanese People Live Longer Than Other People? Most Japanese people in Japan live longer because they don’t eat much fatty foods. They stick to a diet of mainly rice, fish and vegetables. This results in less deaths caused of high blood pressure. The Statistics of height gain in Japan since 1870. Most food in Japan isn’t traditional, like curry and spaghetti.
