ssniff® Complete feeds for minipigs
and (fattening) pigs*
Complete diets for all development and life stages
Minipigs show a relatively low growth performance in comparison to the modern hybrid pigs used for
fattening. Accordingly, in growing minipigs the composition of the body weight gain is characterized by a
lower protein and higher fat accretion than in fattening pigs, so that minipigs tend to become obese in an
early stage of life, which may have adverse effects on the health status (bone diseases, cardiovascular
complaints) of the animals. These facts should be considered for the nutrition of minipig and in the feeding
regime, i.e. that conventional pig diets should not be applied for the breeding and maintenance of minipigs.
Feeds for breeding minipigs generally should have a medium energy density and protein content with
improved protein quality (amino acid composition) to meet the increased nutrient requirements during
lactation and to support a slow, well-balanced weight gain (optimum growth rate) of the young growing
minipigs, whereas for the maintenance of minipigs the dietary energy content and the crude nutrients,
particularly the crude protein, should be reduced. In the following table and in the figure you will find the
main characteristics of the ssniff® feedingstuffs for minipigs.

The minipigs should have ad libitum access to the feedingstuffs only for a short period during the
breeding. For the maintenance and the later growing period, a restricted feeding system is recommended,
with a weekly adjustment of the daily feed quantity depending on the body weight and individual metabolism. The daily feed ration of minipigs and the expected total feed consumption over a certain feeding
period can be assessed with the enclosed calculation table (MS Excel).

Complete feed for minipigs - breeding
Description
This grain based feedingstuff was designed for lactating minipig sows as well as for suckling (prestarter
feed) and just weaned piglets (starter feed). The feed has therefore a high protein quality, i.e. the first
limiting amino acids, particular L-lysine, are supplemented in high amounts to improve the breeding
performance of the sows and to support a balanced growth rate of the young piglets.

Complete feed for minipigs - maintenance
Description
This feedingstuff was developed for the maintenance of minipigs. In line with the decreasing nutrient
and energy requirements with increasing age (maintenance metabolism, negligible performance) the
energy density and nutrient concentrations, particularly the protein content, have been concomitantly
reduced; with that the intermediary metabolism will be relieved, due to decreased detoxification needs.

Complete feed for minipigs - maintenance, energy reduced
Description
The energy density in that diet for the maintenance of minipigs was further reduced to prevent obesity,
especially in inactive animals. Accordingly, the feed is ideal for the continuous maintenance of minipigs
or for long-term experiments. The protein content was simultaneously reduced to avoid the catabolism
of excess dietary protein; that will result in a decreased NH3 formation and in an improved health status
of the animals.

ssniff® Pig - Fattening 1 Ered
Complete feed for fattening pigs (app 35 to 75 kg bw), energy reduced
Description
This energy reduced diet was designed for fattening pigs used for special studies or for operations in
which a high growth rate is undesirable. However, the feedingstuff shows a favourable protein quality,
i.e. concentration of the first limiting amino acids, supporting a slow, well-balanced weight gain with high
lean growth rate (protein accretion). The diet may also reduce pathogenic E.coli in the intestine.
