The Alhambra
The Alhambra is Granada’s – and Europe’s – love letter to Moorish culture, a place where
fountains trickle, leaves rustle, and ancient spirits seem to mysteriously linger.
Part palace, part fort, part World Heritage site, part lesson in medieval architecture, the
Alhambra has long enchanted a never-ending line of expectant visitors.
As a historic monument, it is unlikely it will ever be surpassed – at least not in the lifetime
of anyone reading this.
Parador Granada
The building is in the Alhambra, a series of palaces started in 1238 and added to by later Arab
rulers.
The Parador Granada is part of a palace and mosque built between 1332 and 1354 which was
later converted into a Franciscan convent with a charming tiled patio remaining from this
conversion.
Part of the building was the former chapel where the kings of Spain were buried until their
remains were moved to the Royal Chapel where they now lie.
The interior of the Parador merges the Arabic and Christian styles with classic furniture,
several portraits, engravings, embroideries etc.
Albayzin
The Albaicin is a “barrio” (a
neighbourhood) of Granada which has
been built on a hill opposite the
Alhambra. The layout came about
when Granada was ruled by the Arabs
long before the advent of cars so the
streets form a narrow cobblestoned
maze interspersed with small squares.
The geranium filled balconies, glimpses
of the Alhambra at every turn,
the silence and the sound of running
water in numerous fountains all give the
Albayzin
a romantic slightly enchanted
atmosphere.
Cuevas La Rocio, Sacromonte
The cave « la Rocio » was one of the
first gipsy Zambras at the
Sacromonte. It was founded by Mr.
Andrés Maya Fajardo and Mrs. Rocío
Fernández Bustamante on 1951.
Nowadays the cave still being
managed by the Maya family, one of
the most important dinasties in
flamenco. In the last few years we
have received different celebrities
such as the First Lay of The United
states Michelle Obama, the
previous Kings of Spain, Juan Carlos
and Sofía together with the expresident of the United States, Bill
Clinton. La Cueva de la Rocio has
two different caves together with a
big terrace with views of the
Alhambra and the Generalife.
