Stan Ewy - KAHPERD Presentation

Elementary Activities and More
By Stan Ewy, Otis-Bison Elementary
Introduction
Welcome to my presentation. My name is Stan Ewy and I am in my 27th year of
teaching. Currently I teach elementary physical education at Otis-Bison Elementary.
My other duties include K-6 Counseling, Athletic Director and I coach JH Football,
Track and assist with High School Girls Basketball. Physical Education is my first
love! Nothing that I do is original although I may modify some activities that I have
gathered to fit my class. It’s quite possible that some of the activities that I do, you
do as well, but it is my hope that you will leave with one thing that you can use.
Resources
I have gathered a variety of resources throughout the year. Some resources that I
have gathered and use are:
1)
Activities from the Take AIM Workshops
2)
Activities from State PE Conventions
3)
Teacher websites from across the nation
4)
Teachers Pay Teachers Website
5)
Physical Essentials
6)
SPARK
7)
Great Activities Newspaper and other publications
Grants
I have written various grants in the past couple of years. They have included
1)
KAHPERD (Archery in Schools)
2)
McDonalds (Fitness Skillastics)
3)
Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Let’s Move in Schools Skillastics)
4)
KANNE (Healthy Eating Game)
5)
Golden Belt Foundation (Equipment for Heart Obstacle Course)
6)
Family Fun, Food, and Fitness Grant
My advice is to go for it. Actually, there not as hard as I’d thought and there are
great resources to help in writing the grants.
Technology
Our district is in it’s 3rd year of an IPad initiative. We started at the junior high and
high school and we are trickling down to the elementary. As well as using my I pad
for music, I have found some apps that I plan on using. There is a heart rate app that
I plan on using with the second graders since they all have mini I Pads. I also plan
on having the sixth graders come up with a fitness plan for an alternative
assessment, although I’m not sure what this will look like yet.

3 Lap Club
I.
Cones are set up on the inside corners of the basketball court. A
starting line is established where the students get set to run. Students
have 1 minute to run around the cones 3 times (3 laps). Students who
complete this in under a minute are in the “3-Lap Club”.
II.
Modify this to meet the circumstances of your facilities. Distance and
time can be altered such as 4-lap club or even 300 yards.
Hoop Run
1. Place the hula hoops in a snake pattern winding around the floor.
Include opportunities straight runs, turns (not too sharp) and twin
hoops. After the first person goes, the second runner shouldn’t go until
the first person gets to a certain hoop. Tagging the person in front of
you may help speed up things but my classes are fairly small so that
isn’t a problem. Once tagged, let that person in front. Once the first
person reaches the beginning of the line, have them stop so a new
pattern can be explained.
2. Run through patterns:
a. Run through
b. Run through, cannot step into a certain color of hoop
c. Run through, must hop twice in a certain color of hoop
d. Run through, right foot in a certain color and left foot in a certain
color
e. With twins: keep one foot outside and the other runs in the hoop,
at the twins, go in with both feet and when you come out put the
other foot outside the foot (all students start with the same foot
to help you keep track.
3. On occasion I will put hoops side to side and have 2 lines, students will
race and when they get to the end, race back on the outside, jump over a
plastic hurdle (think safety)
Aerobic Bowling
1. Place 15 poly spots on each side of the half court line. I use athletic
tape, and put 8 on the volleyball out of bounds and 7 on free throw line
and extended. Place 10 bowling pins on the spots on each team, leaving
5 open spots to start the game.
2. Players from each teams roll the gator skin balls, attempting to knock
down a pin(s) on the opposing team’s side while staying on their half of
the court. A player who knocks down a pin will run across the half
court line retrieve the pin and place it on an open spot on their side.
Once a team has 15 pins on 15 spots, the game is over. Reset the pins
and play again.
Hula Hoop Shuffleboard
1. The object of the game is to have your hoop land on that area that
scores the most points. By doing so, you may cause your opponents
hula-hoop to be pushed off the circle.
2. Each team should have different colored hoops. The two teams line up
on the endline. Each person takes their turn throwing the hula-hoop
toward the center circles. First Team A then Team B and so on. Assign
point values for each circle
3. Point System:
a. 50 points: The hoop is completely inside the center circle.
b. 30 points: The hoop touches the center circle.
c. 20 points: The hoop is completely inside the large circle.
d. 10 points: The hoop touches the outside circle.
Infinity and Beyond
1.
2.
For equipment, you will need fleece balls for half the class (I usually
give 2 fleece balls per student), poly spots for half the class, one cone, &
3 short noodles. (These will be found in my office right when you go in
the door). Half the class will be on a poly spot with a fleece ball. The
other half will be by the stage in a line & the first three will have a short
noodle.
On signal “Infinity and Beyond”, the first three students will run from
the stage to the opposite cone & back. The other students will throw
their fleece ball from their poly spot (they have to throw from their poly
spot). If a person gets hit with a fleece ball, they have to stop and kneel.
The next person in line (without a short noodle), has to get the noodle
from the person who just got hit. Whenever someone gets back with
their noodle, they simply hand off to the next person in line. Continue
for about 2-3 minutes & then switch. The throwers become runners &
the runners become throwers.
