Personal Development: Self and Work
In this section we will think about our strengths and weaknesses and how we can set
ourselves targets for undertaking the work placement activity. We will then monitor
our own performance in the work place and review it when we have completed.
Activity: What are your strengths and weaknesses?
We all have strengths and weaknesses but sometimes we are not fully aware of
what they are. We can look at these to create realistic targets for ourselves in
relation to our employability skills.
In this section you will undertake a few exercises and use some specially designed
web quizzes and “tools” to help you think about what our strengths are and what you
need to do to ensure that you are work-ready:
Your personality/ personal qualities can influence the strengths that you have. Your
tutor will help you undertake My DNA1 on the My World of Work web site. Your tutor
can go through the results of this with you.
List two things that you learned about yourself from this exercise:

Activity
Log on to My World of Work and undertake the My Strengths2 - it should take you
about 15- 20 minutes to complete this exercise. Answer the questions as best you
can. When you get to the results page discuss these with your tutor and consider
what your strengths are for the workplace and where you might need to develop.

Activity – Produce a Plan
Whenever you set a target you should always develop a plan of how you are going
to achieve this.
Choose one target and ask yourself.
1. What is my target? Be realistic, can your target be achieved?
2. What do I need to achieve it? What resources do I need e.g. Time, money,
equipment, advice etc.
3. How long can I give myself to achieve the target?
This can be a little difficult to break down but it is important to learn the skills of
identifying what you need to achieve a task.
You are now ready to complete Assessment Personal Development Outcome 1
The next section of this unit cannot be completed until you are established in
your work placement for at least 2 weeks
4
Activity: Monitoring your progress against the targets that you set yourself for
the work placement
Once you have got well established at your work placement, your tutor will discuss
your progress with both your supervisor and you and give you feedback on how well
you are doing in relation to your targets and what is expected of you by your
placement provider.
Using this information, use the table below (using ticks) to identify how good your
