Stevenage Striders press release 17th July 2016
The Stevenage Striders were in action at The handicap 5k, Stevenage park run, samphire
100, Newham 10k and the Fairlands Valley Challenge.
Handicap 5k
There were 21 runners in the club’s third handicap 5k on Wednesday. With the nadicap
system all runners have a target time with the slower runners going first and the quicker
runners then trying to catch them! The winner of the race is the runner who beats their
target by the greatest margin.
The winner on the night was new member Shurmaine McCabe. She had a target time of 34
minutes and ran 7:31 inside it with a race time of 26:29. The first man to finish was Andy
Wilde in 28:21. The quickest lady on the night was Joy Nunn in 22:12 and the quickest man
was Steve Wells in 20:13.

There were 262 finishers in the Stevenage ParkRun on Saturday and Steve Wells finished
first Strider and fourteenth overall in a personal best of 20:10. Ken Marshall came in next
with a PB of 25:22 and first in his age group. Darren Gilbert was close behind in 25:52,
following a long lay off due to injury. James Marshall posted 27:33 with Sandra Howes in
28:05 and Richard Bates in a personal best of 32:31.
Samphire 100
Danik Bates took part in his first 100 mile race at the weekend at Samphire Hoo, a beautiful
nature reserve between Dover and Folkestone in Kent with the huge Shakespeare Cliff (part
of the White Cliffs) overlooking all the runners all the way. With no race plan, no proper
advice on food intake and only finishing a 30 mile ultra in the mountain of Switzerland two
weeks previously, what could go wrong?!
With 27 laps of 3.71 miles to complete on a very hot day with lack of sea breeze, the run
was going pretty well until about 12h36 into the race, when Danik pulled out due to a groin
injury. In the end 51 miles was ran and because of the time, Danik was able to drop down to
the one of the other events, the 12 hour challenge and the result recorded. Danik
completed 50 miles bang on the 12 hour mark!
Newham Olympic Park 10k
Marc Hagland, Ian Levy, Jo Holmes and Fran Levy took on the Newham 10k in the Olympic
park on Sunday. In very hot and humid conditions Fran was 9th lady in her age group out of
over 2000 runners Marc Hagland finished in a time of 53:13. Ian and Jo ran together as
brother and sister finishing in 76 minutes.
Fairlands Valley Challenge
Club coach Chris Leigh and John Wilden took on the Fairlands Valley Challenge 26.3 mile
course on Sunday. This was Chris’s 41st marathon and the 7th this year in his 12 in 12
challenge.. In very hot conditions the runners had to chart their progress around a course
using the detailed route instructions. Things started well through to checkpoint 2 at Tewin
but shortly afterwards problems with Chris’s Achilles' tendon brought them to walking
pace. They eventually both finished in a time of 7 hours 35 minutes.
