Organisms Need… Subtitle All Organisms Need… 1. Food 2. Water 3. Air 4. A place to live Food All organisms need food to live. Food provides organisms with energy and raw materials needed to carry on life processes. Food Producers (autotrophs): organisms that make their own food. Plants are the only producers. Consumers (heterotrophs): organisms that eat other organisms to get energy. Decomposers: organisms (consumers) that obtain food by breaking down dead organisms. Plants make food by Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process of converting carbon dioxide into sugar by use of sunlight. photo = light Synthesis = building 6CO 2 + 6H 2O → → → → C 6H 12O 6 + 6O 2 Carbon dioxide + water → → → → glucose + oxygen Water Water makes 70% of your body weight. We can only live for 3 days without water. Air Most organisms require oxygen to stay alive. Homeostasis The maintenance of a stable internal condition. Examples: Constant body temperature Constant sugar level Constant oxygen/carbon dioxide level Homeo Stasis = same = status
