FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK ..... There are many excellent things happening at Carleton throughout the month of April. We will have our grade 6 - 8 Historica Fair on April 11th. The Forest of Reading bookclubs, junior basketball and recess intramurals also continue. Don't forget about the Rankin Run! We will collect permissions for students to participate and collect pledges throughout April. TECHKNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE Earlier this month, two teams of intermediate students competed in the preliminary round of this year's TechKnowledge Challenge held at St. Catharines Collegiate SS. Teams were required to apply the problem-solving process in order to design and build a crane that would lift several items of different sizes and weights from a lower platform up to a higher platform. Applying their knowledge and skills relating to woodworking, hydraulics, gears, and electricity, both of our teams were successful in creating a machine to accomplish this task. In addition, Carleton team one earned the opportunity to progress to the DSBN finals the following week to compete against schools from all over the Niagara Region. Our Cobras received many compliments on their effective and original design from the engineers who were judging the event. Congratulations to both of our teams on a job well done! Members of team one were Owen K., Nic G., Curtis S, and Madeline M. and team two consisted of Arnold A., Isaak S., Jalyn R., and Erin T. TALENT SHOW 2017 Organization for the 4th annual “Carleton’s Got Talent”, talent and art showcase is well underway. We are looking for a variety of acts: anything from singing and dancing to sports skills and comedy. If your child has a talent, we want them to share it! Sign-up is now complete and auditions will take place the week of April 3-7. An audition list will be posted outside the library with selected times for each act. Successful students will be notified and permission forms will be sent home. Please make sure your child returns the form promptly. This year’s show will take place on Monday, May 1st. We will be holding a full dress rehearsal during the afternoon of the 1st beginning at 1pm. The full show will be an evening performance beginning at 6pm. More information to come! If your child has signed up to audition, please help them practice and make sure that they come to school with everything they need for their audition (music, costume, props, rehearsed talent). Thank-you. “HAPPY CAMPER SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR” The "Happy Camper" Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Carleton May 1-4. We will be open on the evening of May 1 for those wishing to purchase books following the Talent Show and there will be a door prize drawn that evening. Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase books from the Fair from Tuesday through Thursday. The book fair is a great way for us to raise money to purchase books and other supplies such as math manipulatives for our school. For every $10.00 in books sold at the fair, $6.00 goes back to our school! THE RANKIN RUN The 12th Annual Rankin Run is on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at the Grantham Lions Park in St. Catharines. Carleton School will be participating in the Run for the fourth year! Last year we won the award for the most participants for a school and 2nd for the most money raised by a school! Let’s see if we can repeat and build on this success. If you wish to participate in the Rankin Run, please complete and return the orange form that will be sent home on April 13th. This commitment sheet is due back to Mrs. Read or Mr. Howell by Thursday, April 27th. Don't forget to include your shirt order! Each participant listed will be given a pledge sheet once the commitment sheet and registration fee have been submitted. Please consider collecting sponsors for the event. All pledge forms and money are due to Mrs. Read or Mr. Howell no later than Thursday, May 18th, 2017. More information is available through the following link: https://secure.rankincancerrun.com/participant-admin-home SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY Parents, teachers and students will have an opportunity to complete the surveys this Spring. More information will be sent home shortly and available on the school website. FOREST OF READING BOOK CLUBS Our Silver Birch and Red Maple Book Clubs will soon be ending for the year with the DSBN Galas for each group. This year, both events will be held on Friday, May 5 at the Scotiabank® Convention Centre in Niagara Falls. These events are so popular that schools are limited in the number of eligible readers that can attend. Mrs. Mason, Mr. Howell, Mrs. Schonewille and Mrs. VanderHoeven will be selecting Tree Reading Cobras from our in-school sessions to represent Carleton at the gala. HOT LUNCHES FOR JUNE Our hot lunches will come to an end in May because June is a busy month. We will continue to offer milk for the first two weeks of June only. All hot lunches orders will be available on line only. Hot lunches will resume in October or November.
