AP Biology 2017-2018

AP Biology – Mr. Mazzella – NEHS
AP Biology 2017-2018
Suggested Summer Activities
Welcome to AP Biology! You have selected a very challenging course. In order to cover all of the
material necessary for you to be successful on the AP Biology exam in May, I am highly suggesting that
you begin some of the work on your own while you have some extra time this summer.
Part I: Send an email from your own email address to [email protected]. Please do this by June 12,
2017. Use an email that you will check regularly for updates and assignments.
Draft the email to me following these rules:
● Use clearly written, full sentences. Do not abbreviate words like you are texting with a friend.
Use spell check! This email is a professional communication like you would have with a college
professor and I want to get a feel for your writing abilities.
● Address it to Mr. Mazzella
● Make the Subject: “AP Bio: Introduction to <Insert Your Name Here>”(Do not include the quote
marks or the brackets, just the words)
● Begin the email with a formal salutation, like “Mr. or Dear Mr.”
● Now introduce yourself (your name) and tell me a little bit about yourself:
● What do you like to do (hobbies, sports, music, interests, etc.) in / out of school?
● Do you have a job or other significant time commitments outside of academics?
● Will AP Biology be your first AP science course?
● What did you like/dislike about your earlier science classes? Why?
● Which other teachers in my department have you had classes with? What subject(s)?
● What was the last book you read for fun? What did you think of it?
● What are you looking forward to the most in AP Biology?
● What are you most anxious or worried about in AP Biology?
● End the email with a formal closing: “Cordially”, “Sincerely”, etc. and add your name as if you
signed a letter.
Part II:
This section is a basic review of what you learned in honors (or regular) biology as well as a
review of concepts from chemistry. Because of the limited time allotted in class, it is expected you will
come to class each day prepared by previewing the material through completion of chapter readings,
viewing podcasts, and answering questions. This summer, it is highly suggested that you learn the
material in chapters 1, 2, and 3 from “Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life” By Starr, Taggart, Evers,
and Starr 14th edition.
This is due the Week of September 5th, 2017
(Exact date to be determined at a later time due to A/B Day schedule)
You will be utilizing the following websites extensively:
Bozeman Science
http://www.bozemanscience.com/ap-biology/ (Video lectures will come from this site)
Crash Course: Biology (YouTube Channel)
https://www.yourtube.com/playlist?list=PL3EED4C1D684D3ADF
You will be reading chapters 1, 2, and 3 in the textbook. Included in this packet are the activities that go
along with the topics of introducing biology, the chemistry of life, and molecules of life. Within the first
week of class there will be an activity reviewing these concepts. (Time permitting)
Part III:
●
●
Read the directions and select a book for the AP Biology Non-Fiction Book Summary.
The book review paper will be checked on the following dates. Also, you will share a brief
summary of your reading to the class on those dates as well.
Each Chapter/Event summary will count towards a final grade (formative/summative TBD). If
you are absent on the day it is due, it is due immediately upon your return.
Approximate Due Dates (A/B Day Schedule not released at time of printing)
Chapter/Event #1 – Week of September 4th
Chapter/Event #2 – Week of September 18th
Chapter/Event #3 – Week of October 2nd
Chapter/Event #4 – Week of October 16th
Chapter/Event #5 – Week of October 30th
Part IV: Get a head start on the Science Experiences required for each marking period.
Each marking
period will have a Science Experiences grade that will be recorded five days before the end of each
marking period. The due date for the first set of Science Experiences is Thursday November 2nd.
However, many of these can easily be completed over the summer, saving you valuable time later in the
school year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Remember, these assignments are being
provided now to give you ample time to learn the material. It is just a suggestion to take your time and
get a head start on your AP Biology content.
Good luck and enjoy your studies within the AP Biology Course.

Part IV: AP Biology Science Experiences
The Rules: Each marking period, a student needs to earn at least 10 points’ worth of science
experiences. This will count as a summative grade when you demonstrate what you have learned by
doing these activities. Points can be earned in different combinations of activities that total to at least
10 points. Points are awarded at the discretion of the teacher based on effort observed. Other
activities may be included with approval from the teacher. A maximum of 2 points can be carried over
from one marking period to the next.

with hydrogen has a slight _______________ charge.
3.
Because of water molecules’ polarity, water molecules actually stick together due to
______________ bonds.
