HADDO CRIT
March 2017
Deeside Thistle created a sea of green at Haddo on
Sunday 25 February. They raced in beautiful sunshine at
the annual crit hosted by Ythan. 32 riders raced, doubling
last year’s entry, and making up around 47% of the field.
CRANKS
Volume 43
It’s not surprising with those numbers that DTCC
featured heavily on the podium. There were also notable
showings from our tinies in the U8 race and from our
new club members throughout.
The Magazine of
Deeside Thistle Cycling Club
Sponsored by:
Performance of the day came from Erin Murphy who
after a lifetime of fighting it out with the boys came out
on top in the U14 race. Fraser Amundrud raced hard with
team mates Finn Watt and Hope Thomson to win his own
mini race in the U10 race and a ding dong battle between
Millie Thomson and Evie White livened up the U12 race.

Editorial:
I’ve had to edit your magazine a bit early. There’s a trip
to Sierra Leone happening in the second half of the
month and I didn’t want to miss an issue.
It’s the usual trip that happens now and then. Alastair
Brodie’s charity, Kids Action, is supporting a number of
young people who were traumatically affected by the
rebel war a few years ago. We go out to check on their
progress – which is generally good. Quite a few of them
have moved on to regular employment. Others have
started their own businesses and the remainder are still in
education.
As the numbers being supported have decreased Alastair
has developed other avenues for Kids Action to assist.
There have been projects where small herds of goats have
been placed in rural settlements. These are a sustainable
means of income for villagers. There have been
boreholes dug to provide fresh water.
This time round we’ll look at two new projects which
are: a) setting up a home where unmarried mothers are
taken off the streets and given the opportunity for
training, b) the eradication of scabies in the main prison
in Freetown.
While there we’ll take the opportunity to do a wee bit of
cycling. The bikes will be gifted to a worthy cause. Last
time we handed bikes over to youngsters in a school
who’d a long way to travel each day.
Bikes have been kindly donated by Andy Massie, Kevin
Stewart and Pedal Power in Inverurie. We’ve ended up
with more than required as we’ll only take two with us.
The others will be reserved for a future visit.

Tacx Trainer benchmarking
It’s the 200th anniversary of the bicycle and Grampian
Transport are staging an exhibition. They need your
expertise and athletic ability. Age and gender are no
barrier.
They mention names like Alan Campbell, Rod Stone,
Simon Stromberg, Jody Hall, Andrew Ramsay, Emily
Middleditch – the list goes on. So far only a few high
calibre local riders have agreed to come along on 23
March but they’d like 6 or 8 if possible. They’d would
especially like to get data from top female riders.
Volunteers will be asked to come along for 1815 hours
and they’re thinking of a 1 or 2 minute timed session for
obtaining the power data. Riders can warm up on the
track if they wish but don’t take things too seriously!
Having said that, shower facilities will be available for
the riders taking part.
Rider volunteers and their families will be invited to
attend the preview evening which will include a buffet.

TT organisers required
As many of you are aware, Mark Higgins had an accident
the other week and fractured his pelvis. While he is
recovering he cannot do the organising of the Glegg
Trophy 25 mile TT. The date of that race is 21 May. Can
anyone step in to help with this? We also don’t yet have
an organiser for the Coffee Pot 50 mile TT this year.
Contact Colin on [email protected].
City Centre Race
You will have seen that the city centre race is coming to
Aberdeen. We have had discussions with the council and
they have allowed us time to put on other races. At the
moment we have youth races and want to put on a senior
/ vet race. We are considering having teams of six from
each of the local clubs (must include at least one woman,
but she can be co-opted from another team) what do you
think of this proposal? Contact Colin on

Aberdeen Pump Track
Myself and fellow student Neil Kean have been
cooperating with NETCO (the North East Trail Centre
Organisation) in an effort to bring a world class mountain
bike pump track to Aberdeen.
At NETCO the board are wholly focused on building a
large mountain bike trail facility close to the outskirts of
Aberdeen. I am sure you are aware that there is a gap in
the area for the sport, with most of the official trail
centres in Scotland being situated in the borders and
towards the west coast.

Hoodies and Track Jackets
Hamilton Huxham is looking to gauge interest in either a
hoodie or a track jacket or both. Hoodies are available
with or without zip and can be in mens/unisex, ladies fit
or kids sizes.
NETCO have gathered great momentum towards their
goal and hope to have achieve it in the next few years. It
is very exciting!
Depending on size of the order will ultimately decide
price but will be circa £35-40.
NETCO have entrusted Neil and I with the task of
drumming up interest in building of a pump track within
Aberdeen. A pump track is a loop of rollers and berms
designed to be ridden without pedalling, very much like a
BMX track.
Hoodies are 330g sweat 60% and cotton 40% and Track
jackets are 130g microfibre 100% polyester.
If you are interested then please contact Hamilton on
[email protected]. Sizing can be found at
http://www.kukrisports.co.uk/help/#size-guide.
It is our aim to bring a part of the trail into the city, to
encourage people of all ages and skill levels to ride their
bike.

Club Handbook
Same hills. Not so new legs
Your Club Handbook has been updated and republished.
It contains all the Rules and Regulations and a list of
your Club Officials. There is also a complete list of club
records and all of last year’s Championship winners as
well as a complete historical listing of Champions and
trophy winners over the years. You can see the
Handbook here. There’s also always a link at the bottom
of club emails
Hello people. While doing my usual secret training, I met
up with a Club Run for a while. So even though they
were Wheelers, I thought it was about time to produce
some more of my rare written drivel.
I was cruising down The Slug on Sunday when I nearly
ran into the back of The Wheelers, who were coming out
of the junction at the end of the Durris Road. They were
riding down to the bridge before turning left to go up the
Garrol Hill. It was a big group, with about 40 red and
yellow jumpers on wheels. It reminded me of how times
have changed because back in the 70s there were barely
40 members in the entire Deeside Thistle.
Dick Bird – Tonsured
Check out Dick Bird’s latest photo. Go here:
www.justgiving.com/dickbirdwspoon to see his progress
and to make a donation. This year Dick is raising money
for the Wooden Spoon Society for disadvantaged kids.
On New Year’s Day he had his head shaved, and will be
regrowing it until 31/12/17! He’ll update with new
photos on a regular basis
There was a car stuck behind the bunch, so I typically
stayed sat in behind the car. When the group turned left
to turn up the Garrol, this would have been ideal for me
back in the days when the competition was slightly less
serious. The car also turned left to go up the hill; I was
poised for attack.
LETTER
Good manners were shown by everyone and the car
safely overtook the large group just after the start of the
climb.
Sir, My sincerest gratitude to the unknown group of
riders who helped get me back on the road the other
Sunday after my chain decided to wedge itself down the
back of the sprocket at the AA box near Cambus O’May.
They were on their way back to Alford and may or may
not have been DTCC members but, regardless,
demonstrated exemplary camaraderie by stopping to
help. Big boos to the two solo riders who sailed past
without even saying hello (and probably guffawing under
their breath!)
Kind regards, Steve Brechin
With a sudden rush of enthusiasm, I thought I could stay
in the car's slipstream a little longer and then go flying
straight past the bunch with my dreamt-about display of
effortless power. Unfortunately, I didn't have the power
and several of the bunch quickly rode straight past me
again! I was hyperventilating and gasping, and my legs
turned to jelly. I honestly never thought I would get
dropped again so easily. It seemed my Watts had gone. It
was no use saying the Carbon Kids had an unfair
advantage over my aluminium pony; they were just
faster.
Circuit Sessions at Garlogie
Helen Miskelly is fronting the weekly circuit sessions at
Garlogie Hall. They happen on a Wednesday, starting at
7.00pm and lasting about an hour. All members are
welcome to attend. It’s an informal gathering where you
are able to work at your own pace. These sessions are
free to members. Bring a towel. Joggers/trainers/t-shirt is
the fashion. Doors are open from 6.30pm and there’s
always a cup of tea and biscuit to finish.
Humiliated but not entirely destroyed, I looked back and
saw that a reasonable portion of the bunch was still a
merciful distance behind and there was still a lot of the
climb to go. And so, I continued.
Stuck in no-man's land. Half way between the break and
the happy bunch. That's my life I suppose. Not exactly a
winner, but still grateful for what I've got.
SOCIAL MEDIA
For those members who wish to use Facebook to chat
about club matters including training sessions here’s the
address: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DTCCChat/.

above those listed in these Notes they contact him with
details. He’s on [email protected]
At the top of the hill I smiled and waved at the fast guys.
They had respectfully stopped and waited for the not so
fast guys. Someone said they were on their way to
Monument Hill. I didn't want to risk getting dropped
again, so I set sail for The Cairn O'Mount on my tod.
And so I tried to reassure myself, as I do. There is a high
price that people pay for top-class fitness and I just
wasn't going to do it anymore. Wouldn't or couldn't; it
doesn't really make a huge difference as long as you still
love riding your bike.
Sportiv Calendar
I was having a look for a list of sportives being run this
year and I'm finding that to be fairly hard work.
Assuming that I'm not being completely thick and
guessing that others might be in the same boat, how
would you feel about us having a list on our web site? I'm
happy to collate the details, but I could do with a hand
from other members. If anyone is able to assist me in
collating a list please get in contact on
[email protected].
Steve Brechin
But maybe secret training will finally pay off? God
knows. I don't. But I'll be back and preferably not going
backwards quite so fast!
Somewhere between reality and rambling will do me
fine.

Everesting on the Cairn o’Mount
myself emotionally and physically drained. I knew this
phase would pass but listening to music on the iPod a
track came on which reminded me of someone who’s no
longer with us. Cue the tears.
We lost two highly respected and dedicated cyclists last
year - Peter Clark and Dick Stewart. This event will raise
money for charities supported by Peter and Dick (charity
details TBC). It is thought that teams could be made up
of 1, 2 or 4 cyclists. It’ll likely happen mid-summer.
The hours slowly passed and as my mind drifted into
deep thoughts my tally of ascents slowly increased. By
early evening I knew every lump, bump, ripple and
defect of tarmac. The remains of a dead snake in the
middle of the road became a marker post for me and
something to look out for.
As with other endurance events, you will be permitted to
have your own support team on the road or at base camp
and DTCC will also have event support onsite
throughout. More info to follow.
By late evening as darkness crept in the traffic was sparse
and it was soon time for my old but trusty “Exposure”
front light to go on. Using the lowest setting on the climb
and “ludicrously bright” on the descent meant I had
enough candle power to see me through the night if
needed.

“Everesting” – I’m Addicted (part 2)
So, after the disappointment of the previous weekend and
my failed attempt at Everesting Glenshee I was like a
coiled spring desperately waiting for the next free
weekend to come around. The week was spent scrolling
through numerous Strava segments finally setting my
sights on Gairnshiel (heading North).
However, night time meant the return of my nemeses the
“suicide rabbit squad”. Out in force “they” began their
game of waiting for me to descend and then would run
out in front of me. My solution was to descend down the
middle of the road with both hands on the brakes in
anticipation. Lots of cursing filled the air as “they’d” dart
out then change their minds at the last minute.
Meanwhile there was always one that would run down
the road not sure which way it was heading……….
aghhhh!
The weather forecast was good and so, on the Friday
morning with the sun shining I parked the car at the top
in the layby and freewheeled my way down to the bottom
of the segment.
Night time meant a stunning moon but with it the
temperature fell quickly. Time for the winter jacket and
gloves to go on. By 1am I was stopping on a regular basis
and getting picky about food and forcing myself to eat
something. Meanwhile, my coffee was lukewarm and not
very pleasant to drink. The GPS was running out of
power and by 2am it died.
8am and I had 65 ascents in front of me but, if needed I
had all day (and night) to complete my ride. The climb
was easy going and with little traffic the morning period
passed without incident. I’d decided I would stop every 3
hours even if I didn’t need to.
On the menu today was: Brussels pate with mayonnaise
in wholemeal softies, two big flasks of coffee, jumbo
packet of chocolate raisins, “Jaffa Cake” cake bars,
“Cadburys” mini rolls, various “Weetabix on the go”
drinks, assorted gels (emergency use only) and the
obligatory bananas. I’d also chosen to use the cyclocross
bike for both its comfortable ride and perfect position
with the added bonus of a 36 x 32 as my bailout gear for
when my legs and body decided to give up on me.
Added to my list of complaints were brakes that were
squealing as I descended and although I was getting close
to the magic 29090 number I wasn’t a happy camper.
By 4am the end was in sight and it was all over. Having
done an extra ascent for good measure (as recommended
by the Everesting web site) I congratulated myself on a
good ride, packed the bike away, got into some warm
clothing and drove home a very tired but content man.
By midday the volume of traffic had taken me by
surprise. The reason? It was the Lonach Gathering at
Strathdon and probably the busiest weekend for this
section of normally quiet road.
https://www.strava.com/activities/690271790
Once home came the moment of truth and the uploading
of the file………. Cue the fanfare. But no. There was
altitude missing? Strava said 28,024 even though my
Lezyne before it had died, had said I was on track. So,
215miles, 17hrs riding time and almost 3hrs off the bike
and I was 1000 feet short.
To be fair, despite the numerous cars, vans and lorries
passing me I didn’t have any problems. However, one
problem did raise its head as the day progressed. Having
bought a new GPS unit as a backup I’d failed to set it up
properly. The result? Every minute it would
automatically display my “lap time”. Not only was this
proving to be very annoying but the backlight came on at
the same time and thus the battery life was greatly
reduced.
Once the disbelief and disappointment had subsided it
was time for more planning and another go. Third time
lucky?
You can find out more about Everesting here:
http://www.everesting.cc/the-rules.
Apart from a brief light shower of rain the first half of the
day passed without incident. The coffee and sandwiches
were a welcome treat but later in the afternoon I found
(To be continued)

Phil Kelman
I’d already tried (twice) for the record. The first had been
thwarted by bad weather. A gale blew all hopes away and
I climbed off after 40 or so of the 134 miles total.
Starting at Inverbervie I was blown to Aberdeen in
double quick time only to find it took me as long to get
back to Stonehaven. The second attempt had also used
the coast road through Inverbervie, Montrose and
Arbroath. The thinking here that it would be an easier
road was my undoing. Though completing the distance
the attempt foundered some miles from the finish line.
Aberdeen – Dundee – Aberdeen
It was in the days before sliced bread. Memories are
dimmed by the mists of time but Dougal Bannerman
managed to trigger one or two dormant brain cells into
life when he asked me to recall a day way back when.
Saturday 06 June 1970 dawned a calm morning, mild,
and traffic on the streets of Stonehaven before 0800 was
light.
A wee boorachie of folk collected on the pavement just
south of the traffic lights, just outside the door of The
Hook and Eye. Mary held year old Robert in her arms,
her sister Isabel was there, George Fraser held the
watches and I leaned on my bike.
So there I was heading into Aberdeen, on schedule and
quietly confident. The then Post Office HQ sat on Crown
Street and turning here I set off south and soon had
passed my starting point. There was, of course, no
Stonehaven by-pass and the climb out of the town was a
bit of a trial. Still, once on the level again the miles rolled
by through Laurencekirk, Brechin and into Forfar.
The bike was black, silver rings on the seat tube, gold
lining round the Prugnat lugs. Equipment was varied.
Loads of Campag for they had the best bearings, rear
derailleur a Nuovo Record but no front for the bike only
sported one chainring, a 57 tooth TA mounted on a
Milremo crank. The other crank was Campag! In those
days the block still only had 5 cogs with the smallest of
these a 13 tooth. Cinelli bars and stem but no tri-bars for
they’d still to be invented. Campag hubs sported sprint
rims which were wrapped in 6oz Vittoria tubs but no
disks or tri-spokes. The saddle was a Brooks Pro, supple,
smelling of Proofide, rivets filed and all the excess
leather round the nose and rear cut away. That bike was a
dream. Harry Quinn from Liverpool had built the frame
in 531 double butted tubing and to many folk nothing
compares.
The weather was settled, dry, warm and calm. And the
rolling terrain into Dundee didn’t affect me.
Isabel drove the support vehicle, a green VW Beetle.
Mary fed and watered while George handled the watches
and kept a careful eye on the support offered. Overtaking
is only allowed every few miles or so, close following
has to be avoided. But the attention was superb.
Onto the Kingsway and round Camperdown with a horde
of Dundee (cycling!) supporters out cheering. Then north
again to Forfar. Things were running smoothly. No
helmet so the air cooled me, sweat glistened on my legs.
The 57 ring churned steadily and the miles to go
gradually reduced.
As the clock tower in the square gradually eased its way
towards 8.00am I mounted my dream machine. With the
traffic lights turning to green George started his watch
and I was away. Out of Stonehaven and climbing past the
golf course I’d soon settled in.
Then half way between Forfar and Brechin this guy
appeared at my side of the road. He was running north
with one hand held high. From it hung a pear. I took it as
I passed and he shouted “dig-in”. A ready to eat pear
can’t be beaten. The juices ran down my chin and
dripped onto the Team Green (original) colours.
I’d often contemplated attacking the Road Records
Association of Scotland’s record for Aberdeen to Dundee
and back. It was a road very familiar to Aberdeen
cyclists. It was generally the first big ride of the new
season when a group would head for Nicky’s bike shop
at the end of February. Then, as the year progressed they
often rode it on a Saturday staying in Dundee YH, racing
an event in Dundee the next day before riding home
afterwards.
Just a few miles up the road he reappeared with another
pear. It was equally as good. Ally Cownie had been
alerted the attempt was on and he’d come out to offer his
support and encouragement. Buoyed by this, extra efforts
were made over the last 30 or so miles.
With no fancy computers attached to my bike I’d to rely
on occasional shouts from my helpers. They kept
indicating I was up on the record but by how much and
could I maintain it to the end?
Dod Lawrie of the Wheelers had first set the record for
the round trip on 26 August 1934 with 7:08:19. Ally
Cownie of Forfarshire RC now held the record in a time
of 6:20:28. It had stood since 1951. I was keen to bring it
back to the north-east. The roads hadn’t changed much
since Cownie’s day; a half mile stretch at Muchalls
Bridge and the downhill bit past Kincorth to the Bridge
of Dee were the only dualled sections north of Dundee.
Then the descent into Stonehaven started. Winding
through the corners down Dunnottar Woods I was flying;
gutter to white line using all the road I could. My support
car suddenly came barrelling past just before I entered
the town (George had been pulling his hair out – he’d to
be stationary on the finish line and I was going so fast
Isabel couldn’t find the space to overtake).
These place to place records are simple- travel between
the central Post Office in each city by which ever route
chosen. Only, Dundee was a nightmare; convoluted one
way streets would be a big penalty so things were
rearranged. The turning point in Dundee had been
redesigned to the Camperdown Gates circle on the
Kingsway. This meant a couple of miles of dualled road
at the furthest south end.
Dunnottar Avenue and onto Allardice Street to find the
traffic lights at red but that didn’t matter. I climbed off
outside The Hook and Eye and sank onto the pavement.
Andy Knowles, owner of the pub, suddenly appeared and
thrust a very welcome pint into my hand (and me
absolutely abstemious). George thrust his hand into mine
and gave me the news. I’d done the round trip in 6:15:45.

CLUB TANDEM
Total Endurance Ltd
The club tandem is back in business. Previously it was
used to offer locals with poor vision the opportunity to
get out in the fresh air. That remains a key objective. We
could also put it to use for people with arm or leg
injuries, inducting newbies into club runs or even use it
for time trials. It’s 23” front, 21½” rear, has lights &
mudguards. John Sands garages it in Mid Stocket Road
in Aberdeen’s west end. If you know someone who
might enjoy a run out, or fancy taking it for a spin

KNOCKBURN LOCH MANAGEMENT
We are keen to try and be proactive and allow certain
areas of the site recover during the winter months.
With the increased usage of the site and larger numbers
attending training sessions and events it is having an
impact on the site / trails etc. and we would like to give
some of the ground some recovery.
a) Grass area on your left as you come through the main
gate - this area is very obvious as the MPH team have
already done a good deal of work and most of it is roped
off. You can still access the bridge but from the south
side (grass area where transition is for the triathlons)
b)
The camping area in the woods - We have
maintained this area over the last 12 months and it has
been really successful with groups camping and school
groups. The Cyclocross course went through this area
and there has potential for a ‘track’ to be cut in here - We
do NOT want this to happen, the flattened grass will
bounce back if left.
There may well be other small areas that we may restrict
use on during the winter - we will keep you posted on
this.
Hopefully this will in no way affect your sessions and we
would very much appreciate that you share this, where
appropriate, among your coaches and riders.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in
contact.

THE ROLLER MARATHON
A quick phone call from Sandy Lindsay and an equally
quick "yes" reply led to my involvement in this year's
Roller Marathon.
It wasn't until the sponsor sheet arrived that I realised
nine years had passed since I had last ridden in the
Marathon. The memories began to flood back.
The last event had been held at what was then "Aberdeen
Motors" (now a baby shop and car park) in Justice Mill
Lane. I can remember children walking past from the
swimming baths next door, faces pressed against the
showroom window laughing and making gestures with
two fingers at the suffering cyclists!
I remember "Motorhead" screaming from Sandy's tape
deck (my choice, not his!) - while Anthony English (the
Lake District rough-stuffer) had supplied sophisticated
tastes in the sounds of Deep Purple.
But in 1992 I no longer had the experience of time-trials
and long Sunday runs and on arrival I felt anxious about
the next hour.
Explaining to Sandy that I had a mountain bike (and let's
face it, not ideal for the rollers), without question a fixed
wheel bike was offered. This led to the next problem.
This bike had LOOK pedals and I didn't have LOOK
shoes to fit them! But Robert Lindsay did - so, with
borrowed bike and borrowed shoes, I took to the rollers,
nervously.
The hour passed slowly, very, very slowly and thanks
must go to Steve who held me and the bike safely while
he suffered from sweat dripping down his left arm (very
unpleasant).
But apart from the sore legs, what I will remember about
this Marathon was the committed and unselfish attitude
of the Club's officials and members. The feelings of
contentment and self-satisfaction far outweighed the pain
I felt.
People helping and giving encouragement, not for their
benefit but for mine, is what makes the Deeside, in my
opinion, the best cycling club in Scotland, and I am
proud to be a member.

SYNOPSIS OF MEETING
A Finance and Management Committee meeting took
place at Exova, Unit 4 International View, ABZ Business
Park, Dyce, Aberdeen, AB21 0BH, on Tuesday 21
February 2017. In attendance were Roy Milne, Sandy
Lindsay, Andrew Harrington, Mona Mackley, Tim

and Ian Wilson.
Agenda
1 Apologies for non-attendance were received from
Rob Armstrong, Sam Long, Simon Stromberg and
David Walton
2 Youth Development - Approximate rider numbers for
Saturday mornings sometimes exceeds 50. This
requires 6+ Coaches to be operational. We have
approximately 75 riders registered and a Waiting List.
We have 8 Coaches and a team of Parent Helpers. 9
new Level 1 Coaches have commenced training with
Scottish Cycling. Road riding for A and B riders will
start in the Spring. Youths have a booking at the
Glasgow Velodrome on 26th March. Support
methods for hire of the Velodrome are being
investigated. Scottish Cycling will give Youths
specific support in 2017. Capital spend is normally
split 80/20 with DTCC and smaller items are bought
directly from Youths funds. Club pays for our lease at
Knockburn Loch. Coach training is paid from
available public funding and the balance from club
funds 6 months after qualification and dependent on
12 month commitment to the Club. We do not have
any immediate needs for more kit, although a further

updated to show current clothing. Kids’ sizes are
to be removed as it is expected all requirements in
this range are being met by Champion Systems
UK. It was suggested that the Youth group should
have a similar service in place for change of
clothing as offered to the adult members.
Members are to be reminded that a sizing facility
is available with a small stock available for
emergency needs. The next batch of clothing is
due to arrive on 27 February. A survey on the
Pactimo supply of clothing is to be issued to
members
