ISA-SP84 Milestones
ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 (IEC 61511 Modified) Parts 1-3:
Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the
Process Industry Sector
– Modification / adoption of IEC 61511 Parts 1-3.
– Key change: addition of Grandfather Clause.
– Official notification (Nov. 2005) that the standards may be used in
seeking compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 regulations
pertaining to the prevention and mitigation of accidents involving
highly hazardous chemicals.

Two major ISA technical reports completed in 2005 to
illustrate and promote the proper application of the threepart series of standards:
– ISA-TR84.00.04-2005 Part 1: Guideline on the Implementation of

– ISA-TR84.00.04-2005 Part 2: Example Implementation of
ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 Parts 1-3 (IEC 61511 Mod)
– Outstanding effort by ISA-SP84 Working Group 2 – led by
