SURF SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER Surfing greats are visiting Central Queensland and here’s your opportunity to be involved in the celebrations. SeaQ Boardriders, the local surfboard riding Club in Yeppoon is following tradition and building on the success of last year’s community event. Surf Saturday in September is devoted to those that love surfing or want to learn more about the sport of surfing. Saturday 1 September 2012 is when Central Queenslanders will have the opportunity to learn to surf, take their surfing to the next level, and learn attitude and skills techniques from some of the best surfing minds in the business. The Club has secured three giants of the surfing world that are surf professionals and champions in their own right – Debbie Allen, Eddie Valladares and Pat Eastwood. Debbie, Eddie and Pat have taken time out of their schedules to visit and develop the surfing community through hands on advice and support at the Surf Saturday in September community event. Not only that, the evening dinner hosted by SeaQ Boardriders will culminate in what will be a great finish to the day of surfing and will see our guests interact with members of the community and SeaQ Boardriders members in a social setting. You can see by their credentials below, that there is a wealth of knowledge and expertise which they are willing to share with us. Places are limited for the surfing lessons at Farnborough beach on Saturday 1 September and it’s essential to get in early and make your booking. To register phone Pat Eastwood, director, Capricorn Coast Learn2Surf (Monday to Friday after hours) on 49392780 or 0488076595. The lessons will be followed by a clean up of ‘Big Dune’, Farnborough Beach. More on our guest speakers… Eddie Valladares Eddie Valladares (pictured below on left with Rabbit Bartholomew) from Currumbin has over 20 years experience in developing, managing and delivering aquatic, recreation, outdoor education and surfing coaching programs at the state, national and international level. Eddie’s sporting achievements are many – being awarded the Australian Masters Surfing Champion for 2 years running (1995 and 1996), and in 2003 taking out both the Queensland Masters Champion and the Asian Masters Pacific Games Surfing Champion. Eddie has had a long and successful career as the Queensland State Coaching Director for Surfing Queensland working with the junior divisions of Queensland State Surfing Teams from 1991-1996. During this period Eddie coached three winning teams from 1994-1996 (Phillip Island, Newcastle, and Victoria) – a great achievement in surfing! At the international level, Eddie was Assistant Manager to the Australian Surfing Team for the ISA World Surfing Games held at Rio de Janerio, Brazil in 1994, Huntington Beach, California, USA in 1996 and was Coach/Assistant Manager in Portugal and Brazil in 1998 and 2000 respectively. In 1999 Eddie became the National Coaching Director for Surfing Australia. A casual lecturer in Exercise Science and Sport Management at the Southern Cross University (Tweed Heads Campus) and a Resource Development Consultant with Surfing Australia are some of the many attributes and qualities of Eddie Valadares. Pat Eastwood Debbie Allen Debbie has been surfing for 26 years and competing for 22 of those years. Debbie is still competing at the age of 41 years and has just recently been selected as a member of the New South Wales Longboard team to compete at the Australian titles in Port Macquarie in August 2012. Winning local contests, state and Australia titles, in 2009 Debbie placed first in the Over 35 Australian Longboard titles, with a second placing awarded in 2010. One of Debbie’s last contests in 2012 was the RAA Girls where she placed 2nd against the world champion (half Debbie’s age) – a pretty impressive result by anyone’s standard! Debbie will be contesting the McGoo Charity longboard and will be surfing in the Open Womens age group – an event which she won in 2011. Debbie has over 10 years surf coach experience – coaching on the Central Coast of New South Wales and Port Macquarie working with beginners up to Australian title level. Debbie feels blessed to have worked under Australia’s coach Martin Dunn and has significant experience in judging surfing events – from local contests to state titles and pro juniors for both shortboard and longboard. Debbie really loves how to teach people to surf and is looking forward to working with the SeaQ Boardriders Club. Girls are built differently to guys and most of the time are not as strong so they need to learn to surf differently says Debbie. Over the years Debbie has learnt many different techniques and looks forward to showing the girls and guys of Yeppoon how to make surfing more enjoyable so that they will continue to surf into the future. Yeppoon surfing legend and SeaQ boardrider member, Pat Eastwood is the director of the Capricorn Coast Learn2Surf school, one of the most northern surf schools in Queensland. The local Farnborough Beach boasts consistent waves for the beginner through to the elite surfer and this is where you will find Pat most days. Pat is easily recognised in the community and his Capricorn Coast Learn2Surf school is a recognised service provider for many business and companies in Central Queensland. The Capricorn Coast Learn2Surf school provides lessons for locals wanting to learn how to surf, tourists, families and groups including schools, parties and business outings. The Capricorn Coast Learn2Surf school and coaches are Surfing Australia accredited and have current First Aid and CPR Certification and have Surf Life Saving Australia Surf Bronze Accreditation. Pat has been surfing for over 35 years and still gets pumped when there is a good wave happening. Pat grew up surfing the cold southern Tasmanian waters and powerful waves before leaving home at 16 to move to Raglan in New Zealand to surf one of the longest point breaks known at the time. Pat’s love for travelling began and over the years he as surfed right around Australia, Europe and Indonesia where he contracted malaria at his favourite wave on the planet – Desert Point off Lombok Island. Nowadays Pat is content surfing the uncrowded waves of the Capricorn Coast as long as he gets in a couple of trips away to get his big wave and barrel fix. When Pat doesn’t have surf lessons or other commitments you will find him competing in the SeaQ Boardriders competitions. Pat is an accredited level 2 Surf Coach.
