Year 4 Curriculum Newsletter - Term 3

Castledown Primary School Curriculum Overview
Literacy
Mathematics
We will continue to look closely at written
methods for addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, roman numerals and
measures (including time, money, capacity,
length and mass).
We will be reading The Ice Palace by Robert
Swindells. With this text, the children will
be developing their writing skills through
diary entries, story writing, poetry and
grammar games.
We will be continuing to practise our
handwriting to develop a fluency in writing
that allows us to write more legibly. Please
continue to encourage your child to read at
home on a daily basis and to practise their
spellings.
The children will continue to practise timestables. By the end of year four, in line with
the new curriculum expectations, children
should confidently recall all multiplication
facts up to 12 x 12. Please encourage your
child to practise their times tables as well
as the division facts.
Year 4 will also be studying fractions and
decimals this term, looking closely at
equivalent fractions and at reading numbers
to 2 decimal places.

Year 4 Homework
RE
Children will be exploring
The Water Cycle and States of
Matter. We will be
investigating the processes
of freezing and melting which
result in changes of the
states of matter. In
addition, children will be
learning the water cycle –
how rainwater is recycled by
the process of evaporation,
condensation, precipitation.
Please choose a task from the
medley each week. You may do
as many activities as you like
but you must do at least one
per week.
Homework is set on Thursdays
and is due in on Tuesdays.
There will also be additional
weekly maths homework.
The children will be
learning about Places of
Worship. This topic will
allow children to draw on
previous knowledge of
Christian and Sikh places
of worship. We will be
learning key words such as
Mandir, Mosque, Gurdwara.
PSHE/Citizenship

History – Anglo-Saxon Britain
Art
For term 3, we will be
studying “Going for Goals”.
In this unit, the children
will develop goals and
strategies for achieving
their goals. In addition,
children will be taught how
to be resilient with a goal,
and will explore how to
overcome obstacles.
PE
In PE our units are focusing
on dance and the skills we
can hone for table tennis.
Music
Year 4 will be learning about
the Anglo-Saxons in History
this term. We will identify
that people from other
societies have been coming to
Britain for a long time. Also,
children will learn about some
of the tensions involved in the
settlement of new peoples.
Year 4 Term 3
We will be continuing to
hone our painting
techniques in art and will
be linking this to our
literacy topic of The Ice
Palace, which is set in a
fantastical wintry land.
Castledown Primary School Curriculum Overview
For our music work, we will
be continuing to look at
exploring rhythmic patterns
and using these in our
composition and performances.
Computing
MFL
We will be exploring a variety
of e-books and will be learning
about the computing knowledge
needed to create our own ebooks.
The children will be
working with class
teachers, alongside Madame
Pepper from Hastings
Academy, to further develop
their French skills. The
children will be learning
about countries and holiday
destinations.
Trips and other messages
We will be going on a trip to Wilderness Woods in Term 3.
Otherwise, please ensure that the children bring their book bags and reading records in
every day as we also record reading in school in these. Please also ensure that any uniform
or PE kit is clearly labelled with your child’s name. We have a lot of uniform left at the
end of the day which is unnamed and therefore difficult to reunite with its owner.
