GED preparation:
A real-life success story
Sabrina, age
17, came to
KANSEL
upon
direction of
her probation
officer. She
dropped out
of school
because she was frustrated and didn't
feel school provided her the learning
environment she needed. She was not
supported by her parents who had low
expectations of her. She got into legal
trouble when she took responsibility for
her younger cousin's shoplifting crime
at the mall. When Sabrina enrolled in
KANSEL's GED preparation program,
she tested at an 8th grade level. After
attending class and working online for
about five months, she took three of
the four GED exams and passed. She
had difficulty with the Social Studies
exam, but passed a couple months
later and earned her high school
diploma! Sabrina continued to work full
time at Sonic while attending KANSEL
and studying for the GED exam. She
participated in the KANSEL 2016
Winter GED Graduation ceremony in
January. Today, she is currently
enrolled at Wright Community College
working on a nursing degree.

Learning English in
ESOL
Mr. Ghide
has been
attending
beginning
ESOL class
for five
months. He
came to
KANSEL with
no English
language skills or formal education
from his home country, Eritera, in
Africa. Today he is writing short essays
in English, has conversations with other
students and smiles a lot, which is
something he has always done since
attending KANSEL.
All proceeds from Team Trivia enable
KANSEL to economically empower
students through education!

Team Trivia is in its 15th year! This classic
trivia event consists of six person teams
answering seven questions in seven rounds.
Could your team be crowned the 2016
KANSEL Team Trivia Champion? This year’s
questions are based on the theme
“Decades of Trivia.” Be a table sponsor and
organize a team of family members, friends
and co-workers and have some fundraising
fun for KANSEL. 100% of the proceeds go
toward KANSEL education programs.
We love spectators! Watch the event, bid in
the silent auction and play the other fun
games of chance.
FUN for education!
The KANSEL Team Trivia fundraiser makes
it possible for KANSEL to provide quality
education programs for GED preparation
and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) students. KANSEL programs
enable students to secure high demand,
high wage jobs or move forward to college
or specialized training programs.
What a great investment in a person’s life!
