Webinar 1: Overview of the Six Actions
September 26, 2013, 10-11 a.m. (1 hour)
There are definable actions administrators and teachers can take to place students on a successful path
toward student proficiency on upcoming PARCC assessments. Evidence shows that schools having more
than six priorities is inversely correlated with achievement gains. This interactive session will provide an
overview of six definable actions school leaders and teachers can take right now to place them on
a path towards success on the upcoming PARCC assessments.

Relentless focus on the needed shifts in instruction
Providing real-time feedback and empowering students, teachers, and school leaders
Ensuring authentic assessments provide for critical formative analysis
Using Direct Instruction as a guide for building rigorous curriculum
Identification of critical standards and awareness of anchor standards
Uncovering standards for specific learning targets and correct rigor levels
After a brief overview, specific time will be devoted to actions 1, 2, 3, starting with needed ‘shifts’ in school
and classroom practices for increased rigor of the common core. Next, we will look at Dr. John Hattie’s
Visible Learning evidence related to authentic feedback to ensure the feedback loop for all adults is aligned
so students are progressing toward the rigors of PARCC. Specific examples on how to utilize
iObservation® will be included. Finally, we will discuss how to use a critical formative analysis framework
with authentic classroom assessments aligned to PARCC assessments. Concrete examples and
immediate action steps that can be implemented the very next day will be shared.
Webinar 2: Looking Deeper at Steps 4-6
November 13, 2013, 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (1 hour)
This session will continue where Webinar 1 ended. Time will be devoted to address specific questions that
have been provided by OAC schools. The content will then focus on Dr. John Hattie’s evidence on the
effectiveness of direct instruction. Direct instruction is much more than didactic talking, but a framework
schools can use for lesson and curriculum building. True implementation of direct instruction practices can
and should become “the how we teach.” Next, we will address the importance of the 32 anchor standards
as a basis for all decisions schools should make related to identifying the critical and most essential
standards for teaching. Or, put another way, ...”the what we teach.” Finally, the session will address the
importance of uncovering essential standards to determine accurate rigor levels students need to meet,
and how to guide teachers in determining learning progressions and success criteria from critical
standards.
Webinar 3: Empowering your Rings of Leadership (select one date below)
December 2, 2013, 2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. (1 hour) or
December 3, 2013, 3:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. (1 hour)
During this third and final session, school leaders are encouraged to bring together a team of teacher
leaders to assess their schools current reality of the six action steps. Extending the rings of leadership in
schools is essential for success with the rigorous demands of a 21st century school. Principals simply
cannot handle all of the demands alone. This is even more pertinent in smaller schools that have fewer
resources.
This session will provide school teams with instruments to evaluate existing structures and practices. There
will be time for action planning to create a measurable, implementable plan and look for outcomes to help
determine mid-course corrections. Teams will walk away with the start of a 100-day action plan for
implementation and monitoring of specific adult actions leading to success on the PARCC in 2014-2015
and beyond.
Plan to spend several hours this fall with other OAC leaders and some of your teachers to learn,
share ideas, and create specific actions to place your school on a path to successful
implementation of Common Core along with success on PARCC.
