INTRODUCTION TO COLOR AND PAINTING
Goal: To explore the various color schemes possible in painting.
Supplies: Paint, brush, color wheel and at least an 8.5x11” paper you can paint on.
STEPS:
1. LINE DRAWING - Trace or draw only the outlines of several objects in order to
fill the page.
2. Now draw 10 squares over the object you just outlined to divide your page into
10 sections. Make sure the squares are all the same size.
3. In each of the 10 boxes you will have a different design of shapes. In each box
you will create a different color scheme. You choose the colors. See the guide
below:
a. Primary – red, yellow, blue
b. Secondary – green, violet, orange
c. Intermediate – made by mixing a primary color with a secondary color
i. Red-orange, blue violet... etc.
d. Complementary – colors opposite of each other on the color wheel
e. Split-Complement – one color plus the colors on each side of its
complement
f. Analogous – colors that sit side by side and have a common hue
g. Monochromatic – one color with tints and shades
h. Neutral – black, grey, white
i. Warm
j. Cool
