AIM: OBJ: DN: HW - Hicksville Public Schools

OBJ: Given college level lab SWBAT explain the
relationship between pulse rate and heart
beat and physical activity with 70% accuracy.
DN: HW check- Respiratory System Booklet; Review lab
procedures and graphing
ACT: Work on lab write-up (data/results & graphing)
HW: Complete lab write-up (due tomorrow); Work on
CRE Review Sheets; CRE EXAM, this Monday, March 9;
INERH Exam, March 20.
MATERIALS
• You / yourself
• Timer (classroom clock)
Remember:
Pulse: expansion and relaxation of the
artery wall
Pulse Rate ~ Heart Beat ~ Physical Activity
PROCEDURE
Pulse Rate = beats per minute (b/min)
1. Measure your pulse rate at rest for one
minute using a timer (stopwatch, classroom
clock). Record Results
2. Measure your pulse rate after walking for
one minute. Record Results.
3. Measure your pulse rate after running in
place for one minute. Record Results.
4. Measure your pulse rate after running in
place for three minutes. Record Results.
GRAPHING
• Plot your data on a graph using a bar
format
• Label axes and units.

GRAPHING QUESTIONS:
1. What is the relationship between pulse
rate (beats/minute) and physical activity level
(low vs. high)?
2. What is the relationship between pulse
rate and heart beat (slow vs. fast)?
CONCLUSION
NOTE: You can improve the accuracy of your pulse
measurements by repeating the activities
several times and averaging the results. This
would correct for human (measurement) error that
may occur during the experiment.
Answer conclusion questions 2-5.
Hand-in college style lab write-up.
