The Bond Dickinson Million Makers Team Get to know us We are the team that focuses on what matters most to help disadvantaged young people in the UK change their lives Our team goal is simple: to raise as much money as possible for The Prince's Trust to provide for the continued provision of services which recognise talent, encourage enterprise and provide opportunity for vulnerable young people in the UK. In achieving our goal we hope to raise the profile of The Prince's Trust in our workplace and demonstrate the ability of young lawyers to come together to manage a successful business for an excellent cause. Members Our team consists of first-year trainee solicitors from Bristol, Leeds, London, Newcastle upon Tyne, Plymouth and Southampton. Mentors We are grateful to be supported by three internal mentors: Anna Martin, Kate Ashworth and Helen Coxon. www.bonddickinson.com The Bond Dickinson Million Makers Team | 28 June 2017 1 Your key contacts in Bristol Joanna Norris • Current seat: Corporate Trainee Solicitor • Interesting fact about you: I undertook volunteer work in South Africa working with a local school and also at a game reserve. • If you could have one superpower what would it be: The ability to fly! • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: I volunteered at the Princes Trust in Bristol last year so appreciate firsthand the invaluable work they do. I also thought the Million Makers Challenge offered a unique opportunity to work collaboratively and build relationships with the trainees from the other offices. James Bird • Current seat: commercial secondment at New Look. Trainee Solicitor T: +44(0)117 989 6553 E: james.bird @bonddickinson.com • What do you usually do when you have leisure time on your hands: I’m usually at home in Plymouth spending time with my son, embarrassing him from the side line at one of his football games or in any number of other ways really! Otherwise I catch up with family and friends and try to get to the gym or the races. • What was your favourite toy as a child and why: Peter Rabbit (affectionately known as P-Rab). He wasn’t as cool as the Power Ranger figures or Spider-Man but he had a quiet nobility about him. • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: I believe strongly that with drive and support someone can do anything they set their mind to. Everyone should be given the opportunity to make something of themselves. If our fundraising enables the Trust to provide support and guidance to someone, and that person can overcome their circumstances and succeed, then that’s something worth doing. Anna Marjoram • Current seat: Planning Trainee Solicitor T: +44(0)117 989 6815 E: anna.marjoram @bonddickinson.com • How do you relax outside of work: By running around the netball court (or parallel to it if I'm umpiring) to burn off the calories accumulated from another of my hobbies – baking cakes. I also try to see as much live entertainment as possible – be that sports, music or theatre. • If you could be any animal which one would you prefer to be and why: I love elephants - they're such beautiful, intelligent and fun-loving creatures - so I would probably be an elephant just so I could have an "insiders" view. I would also relish the chance to see the world from a greater height (being 5'1 means that I miss a lot!) • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: I think the Million Makers Challenge presents a fantastic opportunity to raise a very meaningful amount of money for the great cause that is the Princes Trust, but also an opportunity to spread the word for the charity and raise awareness of the great work that they do. From a personal perspective, it's a chance to collaborate with fellow trainees and to develop my entrepreneurial skills. T: +44(0)117 989 6553 E: Joanna.norris @bonddickinson.com www.bonddickinson.com The Bond Dickinson Million Makers Team | 28 June 2017 2 Your key contacts in Leeds Katherine Davis • Current seat: Intellectual Property and Commercial Disputes Trainee Solicitor • How do you relax outside of work: going to the gym; playing sport; eating out; drinking wine; and chasing the sun! • If you could be any animal which one would you prefer to be and why: a dolphin – because they are so intelligent and I would love to experience life under the sea! • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: in order to take myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to take on new positions of responsibility whilst also raising money and awareness for a brilliant charity. Leigh Jackson • Current seat: Corporate Trainee Solicitor T: +44(0)113 290 4477 E: leigh.jackson @bonddickinson.com • Interesting fact about you: I hate writing in black pen and I absolutely love The Flash (fastest man alive not Flash Gordon). • If you could have one superpower what would it be: Super speed (my room is dirty? Nope, now it’s clean. I need to do some reading? I just did it. I want to visit the pyramids of Egypt? Boom, done it!) • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: Every young person should have the same opportunities to do what they want and I believe The Prince's Trust does so much to make that happen. The Million Makers Challenge should provide the opportunity to make a huge difference, but if I could make even a small difference to one person that would make the whole challenge worthwhile for me. • Current seat: Corporate • What is your favourite all-time movie and why: Shrek because Donkey is the man! • What's the greatest bit of advice a parent or mentor has given you: Always believe in yourself – never give up. • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: Because charitable initiatives and organisations such as The Prince's Trust can make a huge difference to people less fortunate and everyone should embrace the opportunity to contribute to that at some point. Their work to support vulnerable young people by providing them with services which recognise talent and encourage entrepreneurship is invaluable. On a personal level, the challenge is a chance to push myself out of my comfort zone and to enhance my business acumen and leadership capabilities alongside my fellow trainees. • Current seat: Corporate Rail • What do you usually do when you have leisure time on your hands: In my free time you find me either catching up on box sets on TV (I'm currently watching Mad Men) or doing some kind of sport (running or netball usually). • What was your favourite toy as a child and why: My favourite toy as a child was a Minnie Mouse cuddly toy that my older brothers bought for me when I was born. It was my favourite toy as I used to love Minnie Mouse and probably because my big brothers bought it for me! • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: My main motivation for volunteering for Million Makers was the business element of the challenge. Lawyers aren't known for their entrepreneurial thinking and I wanted to show that we could come up with a programme of events and ideas to raise money, which we could reinvest, earning us even more money. I also I thought it would be a good way of doing more work with my fellow first year trainees and making new contacts around the firm. I also felt it was a great way of continuing Bond Dickinson's commitment to the Prince's Trust. Also a good opportunity to develop my business and organisational skills and organise networking activities. Trainee Solicitor • Current seat: Finance and Investment - Real Estate. T: +44(0)191 230 8305 E: rosie.taylor @bonddickinson.com • What do you usually do when you have leisure time on your hands: I normally travel (whether that is on holiday/abroad or to visit friends and family in other cities here in the UK), go to the gym, watch Netflix or go out for a glass of wine or two... • What was your favourite toy as a child and why: I had a toy dog which was fluffy and white and I used to "walk" it on a lead because I was desperate for a puppy. Eventually, my parents relented and we got a real fluffy white dog, a bichon frise called Nellie, which meant that my favourite toy was no longer quite as exciting! • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: The work that The Prince's Trust do is amazing, and being able to directly impact the lives of young people (via fundraising) who have not had the same opportunities that I have had in life, meant that volunteering for Million Makers was a no-brainer. I also saw it as an opportunity to develop different skills, such as communication, team-work and my general commercial acumen. Having put together the business plan and starting to develop our business ideas, I am already being challenged in ways that I would not have otherwise been during my training contract. I still have Rabbit but she's worse for wear now and my boyfriend keeps threatening to throw her in the bin! • Why have you volunteered for the Million Makers Challenge: Getting involved with the Million Makers Challenge was a no brainer.
