Maureen H. is one of our bright and bubbly Hostess greeters.
She is a superstar in every way! She joined the Centre in 2011
and has volunteered as a Hostess Scheduler as well as
Association Secretary. She is willing to help with anything, a
“get er done” kind of gal! A fun fact about Maureen is she is a
mechanical wizard. When her water heater exploded at 2:30am
she didn’t panic, she “fixed it”! Thank you Maureen, for sharing
your talents with Monterey Centre!
Maureen
The others who fulfill shifts throughout the week all deserve
our thanks! Have a safe & happy summer, Monterey volunteers!
If you would like to be next month’s winner please fill out a yellow chit and enter
it into the draw bucket in Joanne’s office after your next volunteer shift at

ASSOCIATION NEWS
A Message from the Monterey Recreation Activity Association Board:
Roll out those lazy hazy crazy days of summer! Ah, summer – BBQ’s,
baseball and the beach! Some of us will be spending the summer days lying
on the beach, but some of us will still be actively participating at the
Centre. And Monterey Centre will be hosting some very fun events to
keep you entertained. On July 11th enjoy a delicious BBQ and on August
16th test your musical knowledge at the Music Bingo dinner. Both events
are very popular, so be sure to get your tickets early.
While some clubs may close for the summer, others are still active during
the warm days of July and August. On hot days, the recently installed
cooling system in the Garden Court will provide a cool escape from the high
temperatures. And don’t forget to join the popular Ice Cream Parlour days.
There is nothing like a tasty ice cream sundae to make you feel like a kid
again!
The Board would like to remind all Association members that Monterey
Recreation Centre is a scent-free environment. A recent incident left one of
our members suffering an allergic reaction after another member, wearing
perfume, sat next to her. Please remember that some of your fellow
members do have allergies. Please do not wear any perfume and cologne
when you visit the Centre. Save your favorite scent for those extra special
occasions.
The summer is a great time to dip your toe in the volunteer pool. The
Centre has some wonderful opportunities for you to try out. Volunteering
gives you the chance to meet other members and to become more involved
in the Centre operations. If you are interested, just stop by Reception and
let them know you would like to talk to the Volunteer Coordinator about
volunteering.
Be sure to mark Wednesday, September 6th as Discover Monterey day. This
annual event gives all of us the occasion to learn more about the Centre.
It offers tours, refreshments and the chance to win a free membership!
All the clubs and drop-in activity groups will be represented, so if you ever
thought about joining one of these groups, this will be an excellent
opportunity to learn more about them. The members of the Board will be
attending, and we look forward to meeting with all of you.
Until then, may your summer be safe, fun and happy!
Something for you to Think About
For many of you, the Monterey Recreation Activity Association and its
activities have become a very important part of your life. It is important to
remember that just as we are all aging, so are the furnishings, causing a
need for funds for their upkeep and improvements. I would like to
encourage you to either make a donation in return for a tax receipt or to
include a bequest in your will to the Monterey Recreation Activity
Association. I hope you will give this serious consideration.
Thank you,
John Herbert, Director and Board Member
If you would like further information, please leave a message
for John at the Reception Desk.

Silk Reeling is an ancient Chinese exercise related to Taiji and Qi Gong and
is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a health art that provides very
robust strength and flexibility where it counts most, in the joints and
connective tissue. Developed as a unique method of strengthening the
bones, tendons and muscles this extraordinary exercise system from the
Orient offers robust health and a great boost to the immune system. Weight
bearing, low impact and robust, these exercises will improve or prevent
arthritis and other chronic ailments. They will improve your balance, your
blood circulation and will strengthen all major and minor parts of the body in
a very enjoyable and unique way.

CULTIVATING MINDFULNESS TO COPE WITH STRESS
Mindful awareness means paying attention to the experiences of the present
moment: with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with things as they
are. It invites us to stop, breathe, observe and connect with our inner
experience. These five classes lay the foundation through brief talks, sensory
awareness practice, simple yoga movements (done seated, standing, or lying
down), attentive discussions and suggested at-home practice.

Chinese Brush Painting: We do
not meet during the summer. This
past year we mourned the passing of
our teacher and mentor, Mr. John
Nip. We were able to assist in the
Retrospective Show of his works at
Goward House in the spring. Mrs.
Nip has been very generous in
sharing many sample paintings and
lesson demonstration pieces with us.
We shall continue to be inspired by
him. We have several new members
this year and they are a great asset
to our club. We continue to enjoy
our meetings and to explore all the
wonderful traditional aspects of
Chinese Brush Painting... plus
adding some modern touches of our
own!
Chorus: The Monterey Chorus is
having a break during the summer
months but we look forward to
starting up again on September 5th.
The choir practices Tuesdays from
9:45-11:45am in the Douglas Room
and we welcome new members to
join us in the fall. Please contact
Kristina Stevens through Reception.
Classical Music: The club will
recess during the months of July
and August. Our next scheduled
meeting will be September 7th. We
meet on the second Thursday of the
month. Guests are welcome!
Computer: Computer Club wishes
to say farewell and thanks to all the
1,500+ members who have been
members and enjoyed sharing the
secrets of “How to use your
computer down in the Computer
Lab”. Also to the 250+ members
who attended our iPad lessons and
shared what you had learned! The
17 years went in a flash and heroes
like Dave Bevan and Ron Mansfield
who talked Joyce Bevan and myself,

be the first leaders! We were the
first of many leaders like Betty

and many others! Louis P. Fortier,

so does our following. Participation
as an observer or player increases
one’s dexterity, health, social life,
and happiness. All our members are
very HAPPY … and friendly. Please
come listen to us during our
rehearsal, pull up a chair, we love
audiences!! Or, bring your
instrument and music stand and
play with us. We rehearse all year
round meeting Thursdays, 4:30-6pm.
Craft Carnival: Summer is here:
warmth, sunshine, long days at the
beach but the ladies of the Craft
Carnival continue to meet on
Tuesday mornings. Our display
cabinets are always full – have a

months to set up our quilting corner
which will be in full operation when
everyone returns on September 5th.
Come join our quilting bee, we
even have a sewing machine.
Darts: Dart players of all levels are
welcome! It’s great for your handeye coordination and a pleasant way
to spend an afternoon. Join us on

Pauline Price, it’s a tribute to
Canada’s 150th. Practices start on
Sunday, September 10th. There is
no audition for cast but mobility is
required. If you play ukulele or
guitar, you’d be a great addition!
Scriveners: Be yourself. Everyone else
is taken. (Oscar Wilde) The wide
variety of subjects members write
about show that each of us is being
her/ himself, and also provides us
with pleasure as the writings are read
to us.
Sing-a-long: We return Thursday,
September 14th at 10am with free tea
and coffee. Come and join us in the
Douglas Room. We are a very
friendly club – everyone is welcome.
Keep singing and smiling! Happy
summer!
Stamp: I am the world’s greatest
traveller. I’ve journeyed from pole to
pole, and all climes between ... by
dogsled, camel and horseback, by every
land, sea and air conveyance; even by
submarine, dirigible and rocket; yet I
am only a postage stamp. Why not
drop by for a visit and stay for the
hobby: Wednesdays, 1-2:30pm.
Thank you for leaving postal stamps
for Cancer Research at Reception.
Table Tennis: The Eighth Annual
Friendship Games between Victoria
Chinese Seniors' Association and
Monterey CTTC will be held on
Sunday, August 6th at Silver Threads
on Richmond Road. Plenty of keen
competition and fun expected.
Ukulele: We have officially shut
down for the summer and will come
together again on Monday, September
11th. Unofficially, members who are
interested can still meet in the
Douglas Room on Monday
afternoons from 1-3pm throughout
the summer for an opportunity to
share music in a smaller, informal
group setting. Enjoy your summer!
Walking: The members of the 3K
and 5K walking clubs have voted to
dissolve the clubs and do a drop-in
activity instead. So look for us on
the Volunteer Led Activities.
Starting times and length of walks
are the same.
