Engraving fonts are developed specifically for rotary type engraving. Each character is specially tailored for maximum engraving efficiency by eliminating any unnecessary cutter pickups. From single line fonts such as Gothic and Futura to multi‐stroke fonts such as Helvetica 6 line, efficient cutter paths were designed into each character to provide quick, accurate engraving. THE TERM PATH REFERS TO THE LITERAL PATH THAT THE ENGRAVER FOLLOWS AS IT ENGRAVES. Engraving fonts come in a wide variety, anywhere from single line fonts to 6 line fonts. For example: This Gothic letter G is what is known as a single line font. As you can see, there is but one line that makes the entire letter and would engrave quite quickly. This Helvetica letter H is what is known as a 6 line font. If you count the lines that make up the font you will find 6 of them. The engraving time for this character would be a bit longer than that of a single line font. It is easy to see that the Gothic letter G would engrave very quickly and efficiently. However, the drawback to single line fonts is that at larger character Professional Engraving Systems Page 9 Font Book Xenetech heights they would require a cutter larger than perhaps available. Multi stroke fonts such as Helvetica 6 Line provide a bolder look by increasing the number of paths the cutter has to follow to generate the character. The advantage to this is the ability to engrave larger character heights using small to average sized cutters. However, the disadvantage is increased engraving time. Another advantage when using multi stroke fonts is obvious when engraving serif style fonts. A smaller cutter has the ability to reach the ends of the serifs where a small cut is necessary, and the side by side multi stroke paths will generate the wider, bolder portion of the character. Serifs are semi­structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols Professional Engraving Systems Page 10 Font Book Xenetech The Difference Between True Type Fonts and Engraving Fonts One question that you might be asking yourself is “why can’t I just engrave true type fonts?” The answer comes with good news and bad news. The good news is you can indeed engrave true type fonts. The bad news is that you will lose the efficiency and there are several steps that you need to take before you can engrave them. Basically, a true type font is nothing but an outline with a bitmap fill. So in order to engrave it, you need to replace the fill with a cutter path. Look at the example below. The word Helvetica is an engraving font. Notice how the lines follow the shape of each character? This type of engraving path requires fewer cutter pick up’s and the engraving time is greatly reduced. The word Arial Black is a true type font. What you see below is the finished product after the fill was removed, the hatch fill inserted and the hatch spacing adjusted for the proper cutter size. Notice how the cutter path only moves in Professional Engraving Systems Page 11 Font Book Xenetech one direction. This will require more cutter pick up’s and with the added hatch lines will greatly increase the job time. How Do I Get More Engraving Fonts When you installed the XGW software you were asked to choose 40 engraving fonts. There are 87 total engraving fonts available to you through Xenetech. You can either purchase these additional fonts individually or all at once. To purchase additional fonts, contact Xenetech to speak with one our Customer Service Representatives (see Appendix A). Once your purchase has been made you will be directed by the representative on exactly what to do to receive your font(s). Font Listing On the following pages are all of the engraving fonts that Xenetech offers. The actual filenames for the fonts are located directly below the name of the font. If you were one of the customers that installed using the “40 most common” button, these fonts are also marked at the bottom center of the page. On the following pages, you can preview the upper case, lower case and numbers for each font. For fonts such as Ribbons and vinyl type fonts, each of the symbols is listed. This stands for Upper Case Lower Case meaning that the lower case letters for that font are capital letters but more the size of a regular lower case letter.
