Maxum® Advance Plus Upgrade
The Maxum edition II from Siemens is the most advanced
and cost-effective process gas chromatograph today. Now,
the Maxum Advance Plus Upgrade provides users with
a simple answer to a difficult question: How can we get
the cost-saving benefits of new Maxum technology while
preserving our existing chromatograph investment? The
Maxum Advance Plus is a field-installable upgrade that
brings the powerful, cost-saving benefits of Maxum to
older existing Optichrom® Advance gas chromatographs.
Product description
The Maxum Advance Plus Upgrade is a replacement “door
assembly” for Optichrom Advance gas chromatographs. All
of the vital system electronics from Maxum are integrated
inside this new door. In the field, the older, existing door
assembly is removed by unplugging its cables and lifting
it off of its hinges. The Maxum Advance Plus then goes in
its place and gives the older Optichrom Advance the same
capabilities as a new Maxum edition II including the builtin Maxum Maintenance Panel. Software functions of the
older unit are easily recreated in the new Maxum software
environment using the new built-in Maxum Maintenance
Panel and a Maxum Workstation running on a laptop PC.

Maxum Advance Plus provides Maxum features
With the same features as a new Maxum edition II, the Maxum
Advance Plus Upgrade saves money in even more ways, both
immediately and in the future.
How to purchase
Maxum Advance Plus may be purchased by
contacting any Siemens chromatograph sales office.
The product includes all the electronics necessary to
upgrade an older Optichrom Advance chromatograph
and connect to an existing Advance Data Hiway.
Since Maxum Advance Plus uses the same software
as Maxum edition II, it is easy for users who have
experience with the newer product to convert the
older Optichrom Advance application software to the new Maxum
system. Optionally, complete software conversion and field
installation and startup services may also be purchased from
Siemens.
J Calibration is fast and easy. Old and new response factors can
be compared on a single screen and updated with a single button push which is much faster than the “two-line display” of
the Optichrom analyzer.
J EZChrom does automatic peak tracking. When components peaks move as column age, EZChrom adjusts so the Maxum Advance Plus needs less maintenance.
J Maxum’s Workstation improves efficiency. It lowers routine maintenance costs and improves system up time with comprehensive screens that display results and chromatogram information quickly – eliminating the slow method of reviewing data one item at a time.
J Maxum Advance Plus connects to the high speed Maxum communication network.
After the analyzers have been upgraded, it becomes possible to upgrade the network.
Then, the workstation can be used remotely from the GC itself. This means many routine
maintenance checks can be done without
spending valuable time in the field.
Technical summary
All components are packaged in a metal frame door, hinged and ready for installation on the

front of an Optichrom Advance chromatograph electronics enclosure. The door replaces the
existing “Controller Board Assembly” used with the Optichrom. The door has the same height and
width as the door being replaced and is approximately 1 in. (2.5 cm) deeper.

New power supply and cable are included with the new Maxum Advance
Plus door.

The upgrade of your OPTICHROM gas chromatograph is based upon the equipment being in
a good state of repair and operating condition and the application and specific programming
currently running on your analyzer. Additional charges may apply if current application is:
J Air Monitoring or CEMS related
J Multiple Applications
J More than 4 streams
J Any custom program installed by customer or 3rd party vendor
J Communications being utilized other than Data Hiway (this includes any
automatic log or event printing, unique alarm or events, communications
directly with HCI type communication devices, etc)
J Siemens will require the serial and project number for any Advance Optichrom being
upgraded for review before purchase order can be accepted.
J We can no longer offer Advanced Plus Upgrade kits in four configurations:
Flame Photometric Detector assembly and configurations (FPD)
PTGC
PID
Cannot provide kits for any TC3 application
I/O, printer
and DCS
communications
supported
All Optichrom Advance input and output boards and DCS communication options are supported.
Any I/O, Printer Interface or Host Computer Interface boards installed in the backplane of the
Optichrom Advance being upgraded are left in place and continue to be used without change.
Any I/O, printer or host computer hardware connected to the Advance Data Hiway outside of
the analyzer itself may continue to be used without change. Alternatively, all external I/O may
be replaced with Maxum equivalent hardware, excluding the HCI-A and certain other computer
protocols.
Maxum Advance Plus improves application
In many cases, Maxum Advance Plus can enable
significant improvements to chromatograph
applications.
J Cycle times may be reduced because EZChrom easily resolves component peaks which are close together.
J Effects of shifting ambient temperatures may be completely eliminated by EZChrom, improving repeatability – and process control.
J Simulated distillation, air monitoring and programmed
temperature applications are improved and simplified by the
Maxum software used in Maxum Advance Plus. This software makes complex applications easy to set up and much lower in cost to maintain.
J For air monitoring and data logging, Maxum Advance
Plus provides full access to Maxum’s Workstation reporting software and historical tools.

Workstation Software:
Software package includes: System Manager, Advance EZChrom Builder, MMI Emulator,
Datalogger, Backup and Restore, Version Updater, PC Anywhere, Modbus Map Editor, and
Downloader. Advanced Plus Retrofit Kit with Syscon 2 will include a Maxum Workstation version
5.0 CD which can be installed with the software key from a registered copy of version 4.2. If
the customer does not have a registered copy of version 4.2, then version 5.0 will have to be
purchased.
