Back to School: Money 101
Saving vs. Spending Your savings account is just like your piggy
bank at home; you save money when you put money away, and spending
is when you take money out to buy candy or a video game.
Needs vs. Wants: Setting Priorities When you spend money, always
ask yourself whether this is something you want, or if it’s
something you need. Needs are items such as food, water, and
shelter. Wants are items that would be fun to have, but ones we
could live without.
Money Management Tip #3:
In the last Funky Falcon Times we discussed
saving your money by enjoying the outdoors
instead of spending money on other activities.
This is still possible during the changing seasons!
Raking Leaves You can rake the leaves at home.
It helps out your family and makes your yard look
nice. You also could help out your neighbors by
offering to help them with their leaves.
Build a Snow Fort*
Once the snow falls you can build a snow fort!
1) Find a good snow drift. If you don't have
one, make it! Use shoveled snow from the
driveway and snow from anywhere else.
Find a huge pile, or make your own.
2) Make sure the snow is strong and not
loose. You will need to dig a tunnel
through, and if the snow is loose, it will
cave in easily. If you can't get strong
snow, either pat it all down well with a
shovel, or pat it and then pour cold water
over it, to make a layer of ice. Make sure
to leave a space with no water poured
over it, so you can easily start your
tunnel.
*Make sure to get parental approval or
supervision for this activity!
Quick Falcon Fact:
The falcon, which can be found on every continent
but Antarctica, is one of the most wide-ranging land
birds in the world. Even though falcons now inhabit
areas all over the world, the falcon came
dangerously close to extinction in the United States
in the 1950s and 1960s. The decline of the falcon
population was attributed to contamination by a
pesticide known as DDT. After World War II, use of
this chemical throughout the world caused their
buildup in the food chain and then the decrease in
the falcon population. In Minnesota, a population that
once totaled 30-40 pairs was locally extinct
primarily because of DDT poisoning. As a result of
efforts to save them, falcons once again nest in
Minnesota, and their range in the United States
continues to increase. In 1996, the state changed the
species from “endangered” to “threatened.” In 1999,
the falcon was removed from the federal
endangered species list.
Wow, that was
close!
Well it’s
that time of
year
