Welcome to Let’s Talk-Wellbeing Nottingham City Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy? Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a group programme that combines meditation and cognitive behaviour therapy in order to help people manage problems with depression and stress. It is recommended within health guidelines as suitable for people who repeatedly suffer with depression. This programme can help reduce the risk of future episodes of this. MBCT Classes These take place every week for eight weeks. Each class lasts two hours. Classes often begin with a meditation practice and then involve some reflection about this experience (You only have to give feedback if you want to). Skills you will learn during MBCT You will develop a better understanding of how your mind works and be better equipped to recognise patterns/mental habits. MBCT can help individuals to be better able to: Cognitive behaviour therapy exercises are also part of the classes. - Stand back a little from distressing thoughts and feelings. The classes involve discussion about the nature of depression and ideas for developing a new way of working with this problem. - Recognise early warning signs and take helpful action when you spot them. Home practice during MBCT During the course it is recommended that people undertake about one hour per day of home practice. It is only for eight weeks – you don’t need to continue at this level forever to benefit from the classes. - Put less effort into trying to ‘fix’ things or strive for results. - Be kinder to yourself and more gentle towards yourself.
