Introduction: Discuss agricultural practices and commodities in the local community and state. Have students
consider if agricultural practices differ from place to place, and if so, why. Tip: The following activity would be good
to use after wrapping up a short unit on local agriculture.
Activity: Give each student one copy of the worksheet “Agriculture Around the World.” They will need internet
access to watch the videos available through the “Connect to Global Ag” area of the May 2015 Connect page of My
Journey. The direct url is http://www.cargill.com/corporate-responsibility/videos/index.jsp. Students will watch the
videos about agriculture in Indonesia, Honduras and Zambia and compare agriculture there to agriculture in their
communities using Venn diagrams.
a. Note: The videos show people speaking in their native languages, but all videos contain very easy to read
sub-titles in English.
b. Activity Variation 1: Divide students into small groups to complete the worksheet. Students can be
responsible for specific videos and then share with their group.
c. Activity Variation 2: Divide students into small groups and assign a specific country (Indonesia, Honduras or
Zambia) to each group. After each group has completed the worksheet on information specific to their
assigned country, as a class develop a Venn diagram that includes information from all groups.
Conclusion: Discuss the importance of global agriculture. Have students share their thoughts on why understanding
agriculture in other places is necessary. Tip: As a follow up activity use the Ag Advocacy lesson available on the May
2015 Explore page of My Journey.
