Winford Primary School Curriculum Policy Introduction Winford C of E Primary School curriculum includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also our ethos, aims and values as a school. The National Curriculum states that the broad based offer must: promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life “The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said, and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.” NC 2014 “The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to range beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.” NC 2014 The aims of our school are: to provide a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum to which all the children are entitled; to ensure that each child has equal access to the National Curriculum and that through the programme of study fulfils his/her potential; to promote partnership between child, parent, teacher and community; to encourage the children to fulfil the highest possible expectations of themselves; to ensure continuity and progression at all stages of the child’s development; to foster teaching styles which offer and encourage a variety of relevant learning opportunities; to provide a stimulating and caring environment in which the children can succeed. Involving parents in open afternoons and theme days Bringing learning to life through visits, visitors and theme days. Ensuring progression by building on what children already know through the use of AFL techniques Working with members of the local and global community Curriculum Planning There are three main areas of the School: Early Years (Foundation Stage), Key Stage One, Key Stage Two. However curriculum planning happens broadly within groups of two years: Reception, Yrs1/ 2 (Phase KS1), Yrs 3/4(Phase LKS2), Year 5/6 (Phase UKS2). We have planned the curriculum through a two year framework for each phase. This indicates subjects that are taught in topics. Long term planning The long term plan organises topics to be covered through a two year rolling plan. Medium term planning Teachers plan ‘old’ termly within phases. They organise a medium term plan to indicate: skills, activities, English links, ICT links, SMSC links and an authentic end outcome. Each topic has a hook or memorable experience at some point throughout the topic. A Topic web is created which is sent home to involve parents and carers with the shape of the topic. Coverage is tracked on a school produced National Curriculum document which follows each year group through the school. It is monitored by Phase Leaders The Foundation Stage long term plan is developed using the Early Learning Goals in a one year programme. Access and Entitlement We believe that every learner is entitled to a full range of activities that gives access to the curriculum. We take account of children’s different starting points and provide learning experiences that are planned to ensure breadth and depth, enabling progression through the school of every individual irrespective of gender, ethnic background, age or disability. We aim to empower learners through the curriculum to become confident in their abilities. Staff Roles and Responsibilities All teachers have the collective responsibility teaching to the requirements of the National curriculum and upholding the themes of this policy. Teachers also have a collective responsibility to review this policy, under the direction of the Head. Phase leaders will monitor the curriculum across the key stages for consistency. ‘Winford School - where children flourish and are valued, nurtured and encouraged as individuals to fulfil their potential within a Christian environment’ “Education is not just the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” William Butler Yeats Adopted Sept 2015 Reviewed Sept 2016
