Portfolio Viewing Brief
Thank you for applying to one of the courses in the School of Media, Art and Technology at
Southampton Solent University. I hope that this is the first step to you becoming a student
with us. You will find us to be a dynamic and exciting school with some of the best facilities
and links to industry in Britain. We have an enviable, and possibly unique, set of guest
lecturers and Visiting Fellows, including Oscar and BAFTA winners and leading lights from
across media, film, TV, music, computing, computer games, animation and CGI. Whether
you’re coming in for an interview, audition or portfolio viewing, or submitting an electronic
portfolio of work, it’s important that you show us your passion for your subject. Tell us what
it is that you enjoy the most, what fascinates you about the subject and what you hope to
go on to do as a career. We are interested in you both as a scholar and as a person, so tell
us about, and show us, your interests. We would also welcome any questions you may have

Portfolio brief
This course is designed for those who wish to be artists in the video games industry. As part
of your application for the course, you will need to prepare a portfolio of artwork which
demonstrates your knowledge and skills relating to video games.
Do not limit your portfolio to college projects – we like to see a significant proportion of
independent and self-guided works. Be selective in your portfolio and ensure that the most
relevant work is presented first.
The portfolio should reflect you and your interest in video games art.
These are the skills we are looking for in a portfolio:

Understanding of colour theory.
Understanding of perspective.
Practised in figure drawing.

A genuine proven interest in game art production.
A creative attitude.
Demonstration of research and investigation.
Demonstration of the ability to use reference.
Experience of 3D is beneficial and recommended.
Location
Please note that your interview will be held at the East Park Terrace campus. The full
address is East Park Terrace, Southampton, SO14 0YN. Due to the central location of the
University, there is no on-site parking available. The East Park Terrace campus is
approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Southampton Central railway station. There are a
number of pay and display car parks in and around the city centre.
