Be Careful What you Worship, Ps 115, Tom May

Psalm 115:1
Non pas à nous Éternel,
(not to us O LORD)
Non pas à nous,
(not to us)
Mais à ton nom donne gloire.
(But to your name give glory)
O Éternel, O Éternel;
( O LORD, O LORD)
à cause de ta bonté et ta fidélité.
(Because of your goodness and
faithfulness)
Non pas à nous Éternel,
Non pas à nous,
Mais à ton nom donne gloire.
O Éternel, O Éternel;
à cause de ta bonté et ta fidélité.
Sermon
Psalm 115
Be Careful What You Worship
“You are what you…….”
Every day you are on a trajectory
toward being a deaf and dump,
lifeless, stupid, uncaring, amoral
version of an idol, OR you are on a
trajectory towards being the wiser,
transformed, satisfied, deeper, and
more beautifully authentic person
that God created you to be.
PSALM 115
[1] Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but
to your name give glory, for the
sake of your steadfast love and
your faithfulness!
[2] Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?” [3] Our God
is in the heavens; he does all that
he pleases.
[4] Their idols are silver and gold, the
work of human hands. [5] They have
mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but
do not see. [6] They have ears, but do
not hear; noses, but do not smell. [7]
They have hands, but do not feel;
feet, but do not walk; and they do not
make a sound in their throat.
[8] Those who make them become like
them; so do all who trust in them.
[9] O Israel, trust in the LORD! He
is their help and their shield. [10]
O house of Aaron, trust in the
LORD! He is their help and their
shield. [11] You who fear the
LORD, trust in the LORD! He is
their help and their shield.
[12] The LORD has remembered us;
he will bless us; he will bless the
house of Israel; he will bless the
house of Aaron; [13] he will bless
those who fear the LORD, both the
small and the great.
[14] May the LORD give you
increase, you and your children!
[15] May you be blessed by the
LORD, who made heaven and
earth!
16] The heavens are the LORD's
heavens, but the earth he has given
to the children of man.
[17] The dead do not praise the
LORD, nor do any who go down
into silence.
[18] But we will bless the LORD
from this time forth and
forevermore. Praise the LORD!
(Psalm 115 ESV)
v. 1-8 – Only One God is Worthy of
Praise
v. 9-11 Let God’s People trust Him as
their help and shield
v. 12-15 The Lord blesses His faithful
people
v. 16-18 We will bless the Lord forever
v. 1-8 – Only One God is Worthy of
Praise
“Non Nobis Domine = Not to us O
Lord,”
Why God alone is worthy of glory
-because of His steadfast love and
faithfulness;
-because He is in the heavens and He
does all that He pleases,
“[8] Those who make them become
like them; so do all who trust in
them..”
YOU ARE WHAT YOU WORSHIP…
Do you want to be like an idol?
Senseless, deaf, dumb and stupid.
Do you want to be powerless in the
day of God?
Malcolm Muggeridge
“In the twentieth century, man has
created the most disastrous of all
images (idols), which is himself,
and he falls down and worships
him….
Never in human history have the
unworthwhile things of life been
presented so alluringly, through
advertising… This is Vanity Fair
into every single person’s sitting
room, hours and hours of it, day
after day.”
95. Q. What is idolatry?
A. Idolatry is having or inventing
something in which to put our trust
instead of, or in addition to, the
only true God who has revealed
Himself in His Word.
v. 9-11 Let God’s People trust Him as
their help and shield
We turn either to useless idols, or to
a personal saving God – Yahweh,
“Éternel” – the great I AM.
We must remind ourselves that our
idols won’t die for us, nor will they
forgive us.
[22] You worship what you do not
know; we worship what we know, for
salvation is from the Jews. [23] But the
hour is coming, and is now here,
when the true worshipers will
worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father is seeking such people
to worship him. [24] God is spirit, and
those who worship him must worship
in spirit and truth.” (John 4:22-24 ESV)
God is not ashamed to be your help
and shield –
HE SEEKS WORSHIPERS WHO
WILL COME TO HIM.
v. 12-15 The Lord blesses His faithful
people
v. 16-18 We will bless the Lord
forever
There should not be a day in your life
when you do not make the argument
of Psalm 115 to yourself.
IMAGINE A COMMUNITY OF
PEOPLE who live it out in this
simple way…
“For Your glory and with Your
help”.
Non pas à nous Éternel,
mais à ton nom donne gloire. –
Not to us O LORD, but to your name
give glory.
