Paul Cézanne Required Drawing Essentials. A Guide to Drawing from Observation by Deborah Text: Rockman, Oxford University Press Inc., 2009 Course Description: Catalog Description: Drawing course introducing basic methods, media and concepts. Emphasizes drawing from observation with development of relative value, negative/positive space and shape, composition, line, edge development, volumetric analysis of form, light and perspective. In order to experience significant improvement in your drawing skills, you should expect to spend 6-10 hours a week drawing outside of class. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of ART-1010 Intro to Drawing, the student will be able to: Demonstrate familiarity with basic drawing terminology, tools, media and techniques. Draw using a full range of values with the intended media. Select, frame, and compose from reality to the paper format. Recognize and manipulate negative/positive shapes and space with edge control variables. Perceive and utilize a full range of values for describing form, depth and structure while integrating these things into the forms' surrounding space. Perceive and utilize high contrast of values for describing form, depth and structure while integrating these things into the forms' surrounding space. Use effective techniques to form objects and fragment them with environmental integration creating a sense of implied energy and motion. Vary line quality to represent depth and space. Use expressive line quality of a contour line drawing. Utilize basic principles of Renaissance linear perspective. Complete a challenging perspective drawing. Compose a well-designed drawing. Structure: Few of the in-class exercises can be completed during class time. The purpose of this structure is to lure you into spending some time drawing every day. Even if you draw for only an hour a day, you will be astonished by how much your skills and your perceptual powers will increase in just 15 weeks. Regardless of the materials listed for each class period on the syllabus, please always bring all your drawing media with you to class. Having them available will make it possible for us to respond to any issue that might come up. Sketchbook: Your sketchbook is an essential tool—bring it with you everyday to class. It will be used for compositional studies, idea exploration, notes on readings and class discussions, and other homework and in-class assignments. Please choose a sketchbook that is at least 8.5” x 11” and no more than 15” x 15” and label it clearly with your name and this course number. Do not use a sketchbook in use for another course at the same time, as I will need to keep them from time to time in order to grade them. Besides work on longer assignments, all homework assignments must be contained within your sketchbook. Please note that you are expected to put in 6-9 hours a week on homework outside of class. Drawing Projects: In general, drawing projects will be introduced, demonstrated, and assigned during lecture on Monday. Additional work will be required outside of class to develop ideas, research reference materials, practice drawing techniques taught in class, and complete the drawings. Projects will be critiqued by the class the following Monday or on the day indicated by the instructor. Students may make improvements to the drawings outside of class before submitting the project for grading on the next class day following the critique. Drawing is a craft that requires practice. Portfolio: Portfolios will be examined during Midterms as well as Finals. A flat, sturdy portfolio in which all of your drawings can comfortably fit. All drawings must be clean, and neatly presented without smudges, rips, and ragged edges. Your full name and course number should appear on the outside of the portfolio. Portfolio Contents should be organized according to the following criteria: 1. All homework assignments in chronological order with name and date on the back of drawing. 2. Class drawings in chronological order with name and date on the back of the drawing. 3. Sketchbook complete with all assignments. Readings: In the syllabus, I assign readings to supplement class exercises and discussions. Please come to class period ready for discussion we will discuss readings in class. Before we start our project Critiques: Critiques are an essential part of learning to talk about your own works, that of your peers, and art in general. They are a chance to exhibit your growing vocabulary for artistic dialogue and a great way to learn—both through talking and listening to what others have to say about class work. In-progress critiques may occur on any day at any time. We will try to talk as a group at least once a week about class assignments to keep an open dialogue and share what we are learning with one another, as well as make comments and suggestions for improvement. Please note that critiques are not personal criticisms—they are to help you grow both in your work as well as in your oral defense of your artistic choices and methods. Public speaking in general and critical dialogue specifically is important tools in any field. Attendance: Regular class attendance and participation is required. Excessive absences (more than 3) will lower your grade unless assignments are completed with the permission of the instructor. Call me leave a message for me or e-mail me telling me of any unusual circumstances that may prevent you from attending or completing your work. Attendance is worth 10 points. One point is deducted for each missed class beyond the 3 allowed.
