Help us win $15,000 and save the Millis Town Collection!
The Millis Public Library is one of seven finalists up for a $15,000 grant from the EMC
Heritage Trust.
We're the only library in the United States to make it this far.
We need your vote to win.
Our project seeks to preserve and provide access to the Millis Town Collection – yearbooks
dating back to the 1950s, town reports dating back to the 1800s, documents dating back to
the 1700s, and thousands of photographs.
The Millis Town Collection tells Millis' unique story. And it is in danger of being lost.
Due to age, imperfect storage conditions in the past, as well as being printed with poor inks on
acidic paper (this is especially true of our Civil War-era documents), the Millis Town Collection
is rapidly deteriorating. Frequent use by a population interested in its history and heritage is
resulting in further damage. Without immediate intervention, these documents will be lost
and future generations will not be able to access their heritage documents.
This project will preserve access to the Millis Town Collection for our future generations.
The goal of this project is to quickly and safely digitize the Millis Town Collection, using a
special archival scanner that won't damage delicate photos, books, and documents during
scanning. The scanned documents will also be transcribed automatically, allowing researchers
to quickly search the entire collection by keyword, making research much easier and more
accurate.
Once we've digitized the Millis Town Collection, we'll be able to branch out to other
organizations in town and allow them to scan their documents as well, ensuring that Millis'
entire story is able to be passed down to future generations.
