WHY DO LEAVES CHANGE THEIR
THE FALL?

LEAVES MAKING FOOD
How leaves make and use
their food
Leaves make food in
the summer by using
the sun light and
turning it into sugar
 But in the fall the
leaves have to survive
off of the food that
they had made in the
summer

These leaves are starting
to use up their food
So, as the
leaves start
using up all
the food
they begin
to lose
their bright
green color
The tree to the right is
still green and the tree to
the left is beginning to
lose the green color
WHAT IS HAPPENING WHEN THE LEAVES CHANGE COLOR?
As the
food in the
leaves that
has been
made and
stored over
the
summer
gets used
up by the
leaves, the
leaves
begin to
turn the
brown color
that we see
when
leaves fall
off the
trees.
DID
THE LEAVES ALWAYS HAVE THE
COLORS WE SEE IN THE FALL?




Leaves have always had
the red, orange, and yellow
colors that we see in the
fall
But they don’t show until
the fall because the green
in the chlorophyll covers it
up.
Chlorophyll: the green
coloring matter of leaves
and plants, essential to
the production of
carbohydrates by
photosynthesis
As the leaves use up the
energy that they have
stored, the reds, yellows,
and oranges of fall then
begin to show.
