A Tiny Seed
Class: Ladybirds
Term: Summer 1

Our theme began with Eric and
Bernie arriving in our classroom to
tell us about their favourite
The children were asked to bring
back their mystery seeds that they
looked after over the holidays.
During this launch week they
compared the plants that had started
to grow and set up our plant nursery
and garden centre. The children will
begin growing beans after reading
Jasper's beanstalk. They will then be
ready to ask questions based on
growing.
This half term will culminate in Eco
Week where we will be continuing
our theme focus through the story
book Oliver's Vegetables. We will
explore how food can be grown.
The whole school will also be
visiting Moors Valley as part of our
Eco Week focus where we will be
able to continue our theme of
growing.

Before the Easter holidays, the
children were introduced to their
new theme by being given some
mystery seeds to plant and care for
during the Easter holidays.

Why?
Pupil led
learning
This topic will allow the
children the opportunity to
find out about similarities
and differences between
different plants and to notice
changes over time. They will
learn about the conditions
that plants need to grow and
will consider the idea of life
cycles.
The children have asked
some interesting questions
for our theme, such as:
Why do plants need sunlight?
Why are leaves green?
Why do plants have roots?
Why do plants grow so tall?
How do plants get the
sunlight?
How do plants grow in dry
places?

We will compare our school
grounds with environments
further afield.
We will explore the lives of
others in terms of global
citizenship.
We will explore how the
environment can be changed
and affected by people.
As a Right’s Respecting School
we will consider the following
articles through this topic;
Article 31
Every child has the right to take
part in a wide range of cultural
and artistic activities.
Developing skills outside the
classroom and in new areas of
learning.
Article 24
Every child has the right to a
clean environment to help them
stay healthy.

Development
We will explore and develop
our learning in our wonderful
local
environment
and
school environment, learning
from what we see in a
practical and ‘hands on’ way.
We will work as a team to
develop our outdoor area
and look after it together.
Through doing this we will
develop many new skills and
extend our knowledge.
Expressive
Arts and
Design
As Artists we will be using
our observational drawing
skills to make sketches and
paintings of what we can see
growing. We will explore
size, shape, pattern and
colour and think about
similarities and differences
between techniques used.
As Designer Technologists
we will continue to develop
our
skills
in
joining
techniques, for example,
making seed packets. We
will think about plans and
materials required for our
projects. We will use our
planning skills to think about
planting areas and signs in
our outdoor area.
We will continue to develop
our understanding of
technology in the real world
and ways in which it is used.
As communicators we will develop our confidence when sharing our ideas throughout our theme
and will think about questioning and how we can use this to further our knowledge.
We will develop our comprehension skills through exploring stories set around our main themes
and acting these out using props and resources. We will secure our understanding of rhyme
used throughout stories and follow this in our reading and our writing. We will focus on
instruction writing, through following planting instructions and re telling these for others.
We will continue to follow the Read Write Inc. scheme to develop our reading, writing and
phonics skills. This will include reading stories to develop our understanding and fluency,
applying decoding skills to common words and increasing our speed of reading common words.
As Geographers, we will be
exploring
our
local
environment
noticing
similarities, differences and
changes over time.
As Historians, we will think
about how environments
change over time and are
affected by human activity.
As mathematicians we will be continuing to secure our knowledge of number through
practical and play based activities. We will be using number to make comparisons, to
develop our knowledge of addition and subtraction and to secure our reading, recognition
and writing. We will explore number through using money in our farm shop and in real life
contexts using seeds, plants and packets. We will be developing our ability to record our
ideas and understanding on paper using pictures, symbols and number sentences. We will
also continue our work on shape, space and measures.
We will continue to develop
our self-confidence and selfawareness making us feel
confident
to
try
new
activities. We will develop
our
independent
skills
further and continue to
strive towards the qualities
in Lenny’s Learning Zoo as
we complete challenges in
our own learning.
During this summer term we
will
focus
on
our
independence
and
confidence
skills,
particularly when arriving at
school in the morning, in
order to aid the transition
into year one.
Physical
Development
We will continue to focus on
both fine and gross motor
skills and precision with tools
and resources.
We will
explore
every
theme
opportunity both inside and
outside the classroom to
develop our physical skills.
We will be taking part in
Athletics PE lessons where
we will develop our travelling
skills, our balance, coordination when using balls
and bean bags and speed
when running and travelling.
Each week we will develop
our games skills during PE
with Coach Ben and Coach
Ryan.
