Alaska Alternate Assessment Community of Practice

When: February 2-3, 2012
Where: Homewood Suites, midtown Anchorage
Who: Alaskan educators who hold a current Alaska teaching certificate and serve as a special education teacher,
a general education teacher, or as a building or district administrator. Participants must have experience in the
area of special education (preference is at least three years).
Purpose: We are seeking a diverse group of special education teachers and administrators to assist the Alaska
Department of Education & Early Development (EED) with the
 Transition to and implementation of the new Alternate Assessment in 2015.
 Introduction of curriculum and instruction aligned with the new assessment.
Reimbursements: Hotel, transportation (flights or mileage), taxi between hotel and airport, meal per diem, and
substitute costs (if applicable) will be reimbursed to school districts.
Application Process: Submit an application with superintendent signature (REQUIRED for school district
employees) to Kari Quinto at [email protected] or 465-8400 (fax) by December 12, 2012.
Current COP Members: Please renew your participation and commitment to the Alaska Community of Practice
by updating your information, signing the agreement to serve, and obtaining your superintendent’s signature. We

Agreement to Serve
Barring unforeseen circumstances, I commit to participate in the professional development webinars,
and to choose a project activity to become involved in (such as cognitive labs, lesson plan tryouts,
review test items, participate in a standard setting, or other validity evaluation activities) as well as assist
the Alternate Assessment program manager in sharing information with my colleagues when
appropriate. I understand that this working group will participate in the three year
awareness/transition/implementation plan for the new Alternate Assessment.

Background Information:
 Alaska is a member of the consortium is called the National Center State Collaborative (NCSC)
General Supervision Enhancement Grant (GSEG). This consortium is a grant project from
Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and is the special education counterpart to the
Race to the Top consortiums (Smarter Balanced and PARCC). The consortium consists of 19
Tier 1 states, 5 Tier 2 state partners, University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina,
University of Minnesota’s National Center of Educational Outcomes, EdCount, and the Center
for Assessment.
 Alaska has continued its participation in this innovative national project which is developing new
approaches to teaching and assessing students with significant cognitive disabilities. Curriculum
and instruction, professional development, community of practice groups, college and career
ready goals for students with significant cognitive disabilities, and new alternate assessments are
all being developed by the consortium.
