Fall 2012 - Stonebriar Smile Design

Fall is here! My favorite time of the year! I just love to look at the
trees and their beautiful changing colors. I just don’t like the way the
leaves look at the bottom of my swimming pool. Pumpkin spice is back
at Starbucks and life just keeps on ticking by. The twins just celebrated
their 4th birthday! I can hardly believe it. They both only asked for 1
thing this year.
“Can we ride on a horse…
or a unicorn?”
Surprisingly I chose the horse! My
East Texas Cowgirl roots must be in
their blood, so a princess pony party
was the celebration theme!
I attended the Bale / Doneen preceptorship in San Antonio last
month again. This year I was excited to attend with about 10 local
area physicians all beginning to embrace the preventive heart attack,
stroke, and diabetes concept. I will be sharing much more of this
overall lifestyle change in the new year. I am also starting with a local
group of dentists in a SPEARS study club in order to collaboratively
work through specific cases together and share in techniques and
information. This will be ongoing for the next year. I always like to have
goals in front of me to keep my skills at the top of my game.
Donna, one of our very talented
hygienists, is so proud of her field
trial Labrador retriever, HENRY!
After a lot of hard work and time
from Donna and Bob, Henry won
another field trial and is headed to
NATIONALS, a feat not very many
3 year old dogs achieve. So happy
for her and her family!
In honor of Halloween season, we have been educating you on the
wonderful benefits of XYLITOL, a sugar alternative. It actually is
good for your teeth. Seriously! It is a five carbon sugar instead of a six
carbon sugar and therefore bacteria does not metabolize it, meaning
they cannot live in its environment. This in return can help control
the bad bacteria that causes gingivitis and cavities. We have many
Xylitol products offered here in the office. The nose spray is especially
beneficial for children in helping prevent bacteria that enter through
the nasal cavity such as the common cold!
Enjoy the upcoming holidays with your family and friends! We have
sadly lost a few of our special patient’s this year and have a few that are
battling hard against active diseases. Keep in mind just how precious
time is and live each day to the fullest.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…
it’s learning to dance in the rain!”
Don’t let your 2012 Insurance
& Flexible Spending Benefits
slip away from you!
As the holidays are fast approaching, it brings us to the time of year when
most insurance policies and flexible spending monies are either utilized or lost
forever. Make sure you plan to schedule any appointments needed by you or
a family member to fully utilize these benefits. This includes any professional
dental cleanings, restorative dental treatment, fillings, crowns, bridges, dental
implants, and even treatment such as Invisalign. Appointments towards the end
of the year tend to fill up quickly. Therefore, to ensure you have an appointment
time that is most convenient for your schedule, call early to schedule.
Your six-month checkups and cleanings give us the opportunity to stay on top of your oral health.
By finding and addressing concerns in the earliest stage, Dr. Wade can save you from
potential pain, expense, and invasive procedures later in life.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF XYLITOL?
Xylitol, unlike sugar, causes little change in
blood sugar and insulin levels. Xylitol, therefore,
will not sabotage your mood or energy levels
like sugar can. If you eat a meal high in
sugar (sucrose), your blood sugar jumps, your
pancreas secretes insulin, and the sugar level
comes down. Often, however, your blood
sugar drops too quickly. If this happens, you
will secrete adrenaline to try to get your blood
sugar back up again. All the while, your mood
and energy levels go up and down like a roller
coaster, so you crave - and then eat - more
sugar! This keeps your body in a constant
state of disarray. Some people lead their
entire lives on this blood sugar trampoline.
This can ultimately, lead to fatigue, weight
gain, depression, and a disordered immune
and digestive system. Yes, xylitol is great for
diabetics. Xylitol also prevents bacteria otitis
media (ear infections), and other respiratory
problems, like sinusitis, allergies, and asthma
attacks. Xylitol can also be found effective in
nose sprays that help reduce the adherence
of harmful bacteria on surface cells in the nose
and throat, therefore more effective than
saline only.

As a courtesy to you our office is implementing a system

Low-Carb Chocolate
Peanut Butter Fudge
(Xylitol sweetened)
Ingredients:
Serves: 16
• 4 squares unsweetened baking chocolate
• 1 cup natural-style peanut butter
• 3/4 cup xylitol sugar substitute
• 1 tablespoon artificial sweetener
• 1/2 cup half-and-half cream
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
1. Melt the baking chocolate in a double boiler over
medium heat.
2. Add xylitol and half & half. Still well to blend
3. Heat the mixture, stirring occasionally, until dissolved,
smooth, and very hot (no need to boil).
4. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter and
vanilla.
5. Press mixture into a flat container that gives the
desired height for your fudge. I use a fairly small
container so that when I slice the fudge, pieces will
be square.
6. Chill until firm, then cut into 16 pieces. Store in
refrigerator.
